CONCACAF Gold Cup: Canucks And Ticos Draw; Goose Eggs For Honduras (For The Time Being)

The second cycle of group-stage contests in the CONCACAF Gold Cup opened on Tuesday in Group A with both matches contested at BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston.

In the opener, Francisco Calvo's equalizer in the 42nd minute lifted Costa Rica to a 1-1 draw with Canada.  Alphonso Davies scored for the Canucks in the 26th minute.

Honduras and French Guiana battled to what was at the time of this posting a 0-0 draw in the nightcap.  It is likely that the Central American squad will be awarded a 3-0 win by CONCACAF's disciplinary committee because the French Guineans used an ineligible player (Florent Malouda, who had capped with France's national team) in this contest.

Tentative Group A Standings*

1. Canada (GP: 2; GD: +2; PTS: 4)
2. Costa Rica (GP: 2; GD: +1; PTS: 4)
3. Honduras (GP: 2; GD: -1; PTS: 1)
4. French Guiana (GP: 2; GD: -2; PTS: 1)

*Subject to hearing by CONCACAF disciplinary committee on whether Honduras should be awarded a 3-0 forfeit win over French Guiana due to the use of an ineligible player by the French Guinean team.

Should Honduras be awarded the 3-0 forfeit win, then this is what the revised standings in Group A would look like.

1. Canada (GP: 2; GD: +2; PTS: 4)
2. Costa Rica (GP: 2; GD: +1; PTS: 4)
3. Honduras (GP: 2; GD: +2; PTS: 3)
4. French Guiana (GP: 2; GD: -5; PTS: 0)
