Europa League: Chelsea, Benfica Punch Tickets For Amsterdam

Two games were played on Thursday as the Europa League's semifinal round came to a conclusion.

At Lisbon, Portugal:

Oscar Cardozo scored twice (35', 66') as SL Benfica downed visiting Fenerbahce 3-1 in game two, overturning their 1-0 road defeat from last week en route to a 3-2 aggregate two-game series win and a berth in the final.

At London:

Fernando Torres (50'), Victor Moses (52'), and David Luiz (59') each scored a goal during a ten-minute stretch of the second half as Chelsea defeated visiting FC Basel 3-1 in the second game of their two-match series and ousted the Swiss club 5-2 on aggregate.

Chelsea will take on SL Benfica in the Europa League final that will take place at the Amsterdam ArenA in the Netherlands on Wednesday, May 15.

Europa League Semifinals: Late Goal Delivers Series-Opening Road Win For Chelsea; Yellow Canaries Top Eagles At Home In Game One

The semifinal round of the Europa League got underway on Thursday with two games.

At Basel, Switzerland:

David Luiz, on a free kick, scored the winning goal on the final kick of the match (90'+4) as Chelsea defeated FC Basel 2-1 on the road in game one of their two-match semifinal series.

At Istanbul, Turkey:

Egeman Korkmaz scored the only goal of the match in the 72nd minute as Fenerbahce defeated visiting SL Benfica 1-0 in the opening contest of their two-game series.

Europa League Semifinal Draw: Yellow Canaries Get Eagles; Basel To Get Crack At Blues

The draw for the semifinal round of the Europa League took place on Friday at Nyon, Switzerland.

Both opening games will take place on April 25 with each series' return match to be played on May 2.

Here are the match-ups with the game-one hosts listed first.

Fenerbahce vs. SL Benfica

FC Basel vs. Chelsea

The winners will meet in the final on May 15 at the Amsterdam ArenA in the Netherlands' capital city.

Europa League: Chelsea, FC Basel, Fenerbahce, Benfica Advance To Semifinals

Four matches were contested on Thursday as the quarterfinal round of the Europa League come to a close.

At Moscow:

With goals from Ferenando Torres (5') and Victor Moses (55'), Chelsea, despite dropping a 3-2 game-two decision on the road to FK Rubin Kazan, still won their two-game series with the Russian club 5-4 on aggregate.

At Basel, Switzerland:

Clint Dempsey scored twice (23', 82') for Tottenham Hotspur.  However, Mohamed Salah (27') and Aleksander Dragovic (49') each tallied once for home-standing FC Basel.  With the scored after regulation of the second game at 2-2 and the series deadlocked on aggregate at 4-4, and after 30 minutes of scoreless overtime, Fabian Schar, Marco Streller, Fabian Frei, and Marcelo Diaz each converted their spot kicks as the hosts won the penalty-kick shootout 4-1 advanced to the semifinal round.

At Rome:

Caner Erkin scored in the 73rd minute as Fenerbahce gained a 1-1 road draw in game two with Lazio and took out the Young Eagles 3-1 on aggregate.

At Newcaslte upon Tyne, England:

Eduardo Salvio scored in second-half stoppage time (90'+2) as SL Benfica gained a 1-1 game-two road draw with Newcastle United and took out the Magpies 4-2 on aggregate.

Europa League: Eagles, Chelsea, Yellow Canaries Grab Series-Opening Wins; Spurs Battle Back To Salvage Home Draw With FC Basel

The Europa League's quarterfinal round commenced on Thursday with the opening game of each of the four two-game series.

At London:

Fernando Torres scored twice (16', 70') as Chelsea took game one of their series with FC Rubin Kazan 3-1 at home.

At London:

Goals from Emmanuel Adebayor (40') and Gylfi Sigurdsson (58') eanbled Tottenham Hotspur to come back from two goals down and salvage a 2-2 game-one home draw with FC Basel.  Valentin Stocker (30') and Fabian Frei (35') each tallied once for the visiting Swiss club.

At Istanbul:

Late goals from Pierre Webo (PK-79') and Dirk Kuyt (90'+1) carried Fenerbahce to a 2-0 series-opening home win over ten-man Lazio.

At Lisbon:

Goals courtesy of Rodrigo (25'), Lima (65'), and Oscar Cardozo (PK-71') carried SL Benfica to a 3-1 series-opening home win over Newcastle United.

Europa League Quarterfinal Draw: Blues Get Rubin Kazan; Spurs Get Basel; Yellow Canaries Battle Young Eagles; Eagles Take On Magpies

The draw for the quarterfinal round of the Europa League took place at Nyon, Switzerland on Friday.

The opening games will take place on April 4 with the return contests to take place on April 11.

Europa League: Blues, Spurs, Magpies Advance; Lazio, Benfica, Too

The Europa League's second knockout round---the Round of 16---concluded on Thursday with eight games.

At Moscow:

After 180 scoreless minutes of regulation time throughout both games of this two-match series, Jose Rondon (100') and Vladimir Dyadyun (112') each scored a goal in overtime as Rubin Kazan defeated Levante 2-0 in both game two and the two-match series on aggregate to advance to the quarterfinal round.

At Saint Petersburg, Russia:

Despite dropping a 1-0 game-two decision on the road to Zenit Saint Petersburg, FC Basel still won their two-match series 2-1 on aggregate.

At Milan, Italy:

After Inter Milan took game two at home against Tottenham Hotspur 3-0 to square their two-contest series at 3-3 on aggregate, Tottenham Hotspur, with Emmanuel Adebayor scoring in the 96th minute, grabbed a 4-3 aggregate lead on the Nerazzurri, Ricardo Alvarez scored for Inter in the 110th minute.  But with the series at 4-4 on aggregate after overtime, Spurs still advanced due to the away-goals rule (which is, believe it or else, in effect in overtime).

At Istanbul, Turkey:

In a contest played in an empty stadium due to incidents that took place during a home Europa League Round-of-32 match with FC BATE Borisov, Salih Ucan scored the series-winning goal in the 44th minute as Fenerbahce gained a 1-1 home draw in game two with FC Viktoria Plzen and won their series 2-1 on aggregate.

At Bordeaux, France:

Oscar Cordozo scored twice in the final quarter-hour (75', 90'+1) as SL Benfica won game two 3-2 on the road against Bordeaux and took their two-game series with the French club 4-2 on aggregate.

At Newcastle upon Tyne, England:

Papiss Cisse scored the only goal of both the game and the series (90'+3) as Newcastle United won both game two and their two-match series with visiting FC Anzhi Makhachkala 1-0 on aggregate.

At Rome:

Libor Kozak delivered a hat trick (6', 8', 87') as Lazio defeated VfB Stuttgart 3-1 at home in game two and took their two-game series 5-1 on aggregate.

At London:

Juan Mata (34'), John Terry (58'), and Fernando Torres (71') each tallied once as Chelsea defeated visiting Steaua Bucharest 3-1 in game two and won their two-match series 3-2 on aggregate.

Europa League

Round-of-16 action in the Europa League commenced on Thursday with eight games.

At Moscow:

The opening match between FC Anzhi Makhachkala and visiting Newcaste United resulted in a 0-0 stalemate.

At Plzen, Czech Republic:

Pierre Webo scored the only goal of the match in the 81st minute as Fenerbahce will head back to Turkey following their 1-0 game-one road triumph over FC Viktoria Plzen.

At Stuttgart, Germany:

Honorato Ederson (21') and Ogenyi Onazi (56') each tallied once as Lazio found themselves 90 minutes from the quarterfinal round following their 2-0 road win over VfB Stuttgart in game one of their two-match series.

At Bucharest, Romania:

Raul Rusescu's successful penalty kick in the 34th minute provided all the scoring in Steaua Bucharest's 1-0 game-one home victory over Chelsea.

At Lisbon, Portugal:

Cedric Carrasso's own goal in the 21st minute proved costly for Bordeaux as SL Benfica defeated the visiting French club 1-0 in their series opener.

At London:

Gareth Bale (6'), Gylfi Sigurdsson (18'), and Jan Vertonghen (53') each delivered a tally as Tottenham Hotspur dominated visiting Inter Milan 3-0 in match one of the clubs' two-game series.

At Valencia, Spain:

The opening match between Levante and visiting Rubin Kazan, which saw each club reduced to ten men due to a red-card ejection, concluded in a 0-0 deadlock.

At Basel, Switzerland:

Marcelo Diaz (82') and Alexander Frei (90'+4) each scored once in the waning minutes of game one as FC Basel blanked visiting Zenit Saint Petersburg 2-0.

Europa League: Matress Makers Dethoned; Liverpool Ousted; Magpies, Spurs, Chelsea, Inter, Lazio, Bordeaux Advance

The Round of 16 of the Europa League concluded on Thursday with sixteen games.

At Moscow:

Despite dropping a 1-0 home decision in game two of their series with Atletico Madrid, Rubin Kazan ousted the defending titleholders 2-1 on aggregate.

At Cluj-Napoca, Romania:

Fredy Guarin scored twice (22', 45'+1) as Inter Milan dominated CFR Cluj 3-0 on the road in game two and easily won their two-game series 5-0 on aggregate.

At Kharkiv, Ukraine:

Shola Ameobi's successful penalty kick in the 64th minute was not only the lone goal of game two, but the only goal of the two game series won by visiting Newcastle United as they ousted FC Metalist Kharkiv 1-0 for the game and on aggregate for the series.

At Genk, Belgium:

Arthur Boka (45') and Christian Gentner (58') each delivered a goal as VfB Stuttgart defeated KRC Genk 2-0 in game two on the road and won their series 3-1 on aggregate.

At Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine:

Fabian Schar successfully converted a penalty kick in the 81st minute as FC Basel gained a 1-1 road draw in game two, on the road, with FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk and won their series 3-1 on aggregate.

At Rome:

Antonio Candreva (10') and Alvaro Gonzalez (33') each scored a goal as Lazio defeated visiting Borussia Monchengladbach 2-0 in game two and eliminated the German club 5-3 on aggregate.

At Lyon, France:

Mousa Dembele scored the series-winning goal in the 90th minute as Tottenham Hotspur, who gained a 1-1 game-two road draw with Lyon, won their series 3-2 on aggregate.

At Istanbul, Turkey:

Cristian Baroni delivered the series-winning goal with his 45th-minute penalty kick as Fenerbahce defeated visiting FC BATE Borisov 1-0 in game two and by that same score on aggregate to advance to the Round of 16.

At Piraeus, Greece:

Obafemi Martins scored the only goal of the match in the ninth minute as Levante defeated Olympiacos 1-0 on the road in game two and won their two-game series with the Greek club 4-0 on aggregate.

At Liverpool, England:

Hulk scored what proved to be the series-winning goal in the 19th minute as Zenit Saint Petersburg, despite dropping a 3-1 road decision to Liverpool in game two, still ousted the Reds due to the away goals rule (the score was 3-3 on aggregate).

At Bordeaux, France:

Cheick Diabate scored the series-winning goal in the 41st minute as Bordeaux blanked visiting Dynamo Kiev 1-0 in game two and won their series with the Ukrainian club 2-1 on aggregate.

At Lisbon, Portugal:

Ola John (60') and Nemanja Matic (77') each tallied once as SL Benfica downed visiting Bayer Leverkusen 2-1 in game two and won their two-game series 3-1 on aggregate.

At Bucharest, Romania:

With Iasmin Latovlevici (38') and Vlad Chiriches (76') each scoring a goal 38 minutes apart, Steaua Bucharest took game two of their series with Ajax Amsterdam 2-0, deadlocking the series at 2-2 on aggregate and forcing what would be two scoreless 15-minute overtime periods.  Raul Rusescu, Stefan Nikolic, Lucian Filip, and the aforementioned Iasmin Latovlevici all converted their spot kicks as the hosts own the penalty-kick shootout 4-2 to advance to the Round of 16, and an encounter with Chelsea.

At Hanover, Germany:


Lacina Traore scored an insurance goal in second-half stoppage time (90'+8) as FC Anzhi Makhachkala gained a 1-1 road draw with Hannover 96 in game two and won their two-match series 4-2 on aggregate.

At London:

Eden Hazard scored the series-winning goal in second-half stoppage time (90'+1) as Chelsea gained a 1-1 game-two home draw with Sparta Prague and eliminated the Czech club 2-1 on aggregate.

At Plzen, Czech Republic:

Jan Kovarik (51') and Stanislav Tecl (74') each scored once as FC Viktoria Plzen defeated visiting Napoli 2-0 in game won the handily defeated their Italian guests 5-0 on aggregate for their two-match series.

Europa League: Knockout Stage Begins

The knockout stage of the Europa League got under way on Thursday with 16 games, each opening up a Round-of-32 two-match series.

At Saint Petersburg, Russia:

Hulk (69') and Sergei Semak (72') each scored a goal three minutes apart as Zenit Saint Petersburg took the opening match of their two-game series with Liverpool, 2-0 at home.

At Moscow:

Samuel Eto'o (34'), Odil Ahmedov (48'), and Mbark Boussoufa (64') each scored a goal as FC Anzhi Makhachkala got the measure of visiting Hannover 96 3-1 in their series opener.

At Grodno, Belarus:

Fenerbahce gained a 0-0 road draw in their series opener with FC BATE Borisov.

At Valencia, Spain:

Pedro Rios (10'), Jose Barkero (PK-40'), and Obafemi Martins (56') each tallied once as Levante dominated visiting Olympiacos 3-0 in the opening game of their two-contest series.

At Kiev, Ukraine:

Ludovic Obraniak's equalizer in the 23rd minute carried Bordeaux to a 1-1 game-one road draw with Dynamo Kiev.  Lukman Haruna scored at 20 minutes for the hosts.

At Leverkusen, Germany:

Gokdeniz Karadeniz (6') and Pablo Orbdaiz (90'+5) delivered the scoring that staked Rubin Kazan to a series-opening 2-0 road win over Atletico Madrid.

At Basel, Switzerland:

Valentin Stocker (23') and Marco Streller (67') provided the scoring as FC Basel blanked visiting FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk 2-0 in game one of their two-match series.

At Monchengladbach, Germany:

Libor Kozak scored twice (64', 90'+4) as Lazio came back to gain a 3-3 road draw in their series opener with Borussia Monchengladbach.  The Foals got successful penalty kicks courtesy of Martin Stanzl (17') and Thorben Marx (84') while Juan Arango scored the go-ahead goal in the 88th minute, before Libor Kozak's equalizer in stoppage-time gave the Young Eagles their third away goal.

At London:

Gareth Bale scored twice (45', 90'+3) as Tottenham Hotspur to game one of their two-match series with Lyon 2-1.  Samuel Umtiti kept the French club alive in the series with his 55th-minute tally.

Europa League: Group Stage Play Concludes

Group-stage play in the Europa League concluded this week.  All the action summarized took place on Thursday unless otherwise noted.

Group A:

At Bern, Switzerland:

Moreno Costanzo scored what proved to be the winning goal in the 52nd minute as BSC Young Boys defeated visiting FC Anzhi Makhachkala 3-1. Despite the win, Young Boys, due to inferior head-to-head record with Liverpool and FC Anzhi, were still eliminated.

At Udine, Italy:

Jordan Henderson scored the only goal of the match as Liverpool won the Group A crown with a 1-0 road win over Udinese.

FINAL GROUP A STANDINGS:

1. Liverpool (GP: 6; GD: +2; PTS: 10)
2. FC Anzhi Makhachkala (GP: 6; GD: +2; PTS: 10)

Vaclav Prochazka scored the only goal on the 26th minute as FC Viktoria Plzen won the Group B title by defeating fellow Round-of-32 qualifiers (and defending titleholders) Atletico Madrid 1-0.

Igor Vetokele's equalizer in the 87th minute carried FC Copenhagen to a 1-1 home draw with Steaua Bucharest.  Rual Rusescu scored at 72 minutes for the visiting Romanian club.  The host Lions needed a win to advance to the knockout stage.

Athletic Bilbao Win Postponed---And Meaningless---Europa League Match

At Haifa, Israel:

Fernando Llorente Torres (34') and Gaizka Toquero pinedo (76') each scored a goal on Wednesday as Athletic Bilbao defeated Ironi Kiryat Shmona 2-0 on the road in a Europa League Group I match that was postponed from last Thursday due to the ongoing security situation in Israel.  Both clubs had already been eliminated from European competition.

Christopher Samba (72') and Samuel Eto'o (75') provided the scoring touch as FC Anzhi Makhachkala defeated visiting Udinese 2-0 lock up a berth in the Europa League's knockout stage and eliminate the Italian club from European competition.

At Liverpool, England:

Raul Bobadilla (52') and Elsad Zverotic (88') provided the goals that carried BSC Young Boys to a 2-2 road draw with Liverpool, keeping the Swiss club's chances of advancing to the knockout stage very much alive.  Jonjo Shelvey (33') and Joe Cole (72') provided the scoring for the Reds.
