UEFA Champions League, Group G: Zenit Advance To Knockout Stage Despite Being Dominated By Violets In Vienna; Dragons Consigned To Europa League Round of 32 After Falling To Mattress Makers

Two games were played in Group G on Wednesday as UEFA Champions League group-stage action came to a close.

At Vienna, Austria:

Philipp Hosiner scored twice (44', 51') as Austria Vienna managed their first---and only---victory in the Champions League's group stage with a 4-1 home domination of Zenit Saint Petersburg, who still managed to advance to the knockout stage thanks to FC Porto's defeat at Atletico Madrid's hands.  Here are the happy Violets after Philipp's first goal as the hosts played by far their best game in Group G.
At Madrid:

Raul Garcia (14') and Diego Costa (37', that's him celebrating) provided the scoring as Atletico Madrid---already bound for the Champions League's group stage---condemned visiting FC Porto to the Europa League's Round of 32 by shutting out the Dragons 2-0.

1. Atletico Madrid (GP: 6; GD: +12; PTS: 16)
2. Zenit Saint Petersburg (GP: 6; GD: -4; PTS: 6)

Atletico Madrid and Zenit Saint Petersburg advanced to the Champions League's knockout stage while FC Porto qualified for the knockout stage of the Europa League.

UEFA Champions League, Group G: Zenit, Dragons Settle For Draws; Violets Eliminated

Two Tuesday Group G contests from the UEFA Champions League were played.

At Saint Petersburg, Russia:
Thibaut Courtois (Reuters)
Toby Alderweireld's own goal in the 74th minute enabled Zenit Saint Petersburg to salvage a 1-1 home draw with Atletico Madrid.  Adrian Lopez Alvarez scored in the 53rd minute for the Mattress Makers, who had already clinched first place in Group G and a berth in the knockout stage of the Champions League.  That's Zenit goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, whose boo-boo made the equalizing own goal possible, pictured here.


At Porto, Portugal:

Jackson Martinez (that's him celebrating)  delivered the equalizer in the 48th minute as FC Porto settled for a 1-1 home draw with Austria Vienna.  Roman Kienast scored in the 11th minute for the Violets, who have been eliminated from European competition while the Dragons blew a chance to move past Zenit Saint Petersburg into second place in Group G.

UEFA Champions League, Group G: Matress Makers Clinch Berth In Knockout Stage; Zenit, Dragons Draw

Wednesday saw two Group G contests in the UEFA Champions League.

At Saint Petersburg, Russia:

Hulk's equalizer in the 28th minute lifted Zenit Saint Petersburg to a 1-1 home draw with FC Porto.  Lucho Gonzalez scored for the Dragons in the 23rd minute.  Hulk had a chance to put the hosts ahead, but his penalty kick in the 52nd minute was saved by Porto goalkeeper Helton, as shown here.

At Madrid:

Miranda got the scoring started in the 11th minute as Atletico Madrid locked up a berth in the knockout stage with their 4-0 demolition of visiting Austria Vienna.  Here are the happy Matress Makers celebrating the Miranda goal.

UEFA Champions League, Group G: Road Wins For Zenit, Matress Makers

Two games were played on Tuesday in Group G of the UEFA Champions Leaguel.

At Porto, Portugal:

Aleksandr Kerzhakov scored the only goal in the 86th minute as Zenit Saint Petersburg defeated FC Porto 1-0 on the road.  That's Hulk, here, trying to pull away from the Dragons' defense.

At Vienna, Austria:

Diego da Silva Costa scored twice (20', 54') as Atletico Madrid manhandled Austria Vienna 3-0 on the road.  Here, we see the happy, group-topping Matress Makers celebrate.

UEFA Champions League, Group G: Violets Hold Hosts Zenit To Scoreless Draw; Mattress Makers Come Back To Shock Dragons In Portugal

Two games were played on Tuesday in Group G of the UEFA Champions League.

At Saint Petersburg, Russia:




Austria Vienna picked up their first Champions League group-stage point by holding home-standing Zenit Saint Petersburg (who lost Axel Witsel in the first half to red-card ejection, as shown here) to a 0-0 stalemate.

Arda Turan scored the winning goal in the 86th minute as Atletico Madrid came from behind to upend FC Porto 2-1 on the road.  Here, we see Diego Godin, after squaring things in the 58th minute for the Mattress Makers, celebrating with teammates.

Two games were contested on Wednesday as action from Group G of the UEFA Champions League commenced.

At Vienna, Austria:

Lucho Gonzalez (that's him here) scored the only goal of the match in the 55th minute as FC Porto defeated Austria Vienna 1-0 on the road.

Miranda (40'), Arda Turan (64', that's him scoring), and Leo Baptistao (80') delivered the goals as Atletico Madrid downed visiting Zenit Saint Petersburg 3-1.
