Carlos Feraud scored the only goal of the match in the 75th minute as LDU Quito defeated visiting Gremio (Brazil) 1-0 in the opening match of their two-game series. The winner of this series would wind up in Group Eight, joining Brazil's Fluminense, Chile's Huachipato, and Venezuela's Caracas FC.
At Sao Paulo, Brazil:
Luis Fabiano scored twice in the first half (20', 45') as Sao Paulo demolished visiting Club Bolivar 5-0 in game one of their series. The Brazilian club is 90 minutes away from advancing to the group stage. They would be placed in Group Three alongside Arsenal de Sarandi of Argentina, The Strongest from Bolivia, and fellow Brazilian club Atletico Mineiro.
