MLS Cup Playoffs: Galaxy, Dynamo, Sporting KC Take Series Openers On Road

Three conference semifinal series in the Major League Soccer Cup playoffs commenced on Sunday.

At Chester, Pennsylvania:

Andrew Hainault (5') and Calen Carr (30') each scored once as the Houston Dynamo took the opening contest of their two-game Eastern Conference semifinal series with the Philadelphia Union 2-1 on the road.

At Commerce City, Colorado:

Teal Bunbury provided both goals (49', PK-59') in Sporting Kansas City's 2-0 Eastern Conference semifinal series-opening road win over the Colorado Rapids.

At Harrison, New Jersey:

Mike Magee came back to haunt his former team as he scored the only goal of the match in the 15th minute as the Los Angeles Galaxy took the opening match of their two-game Western Conference semifinal series 1-0 on the road over the New York Red Bulls.

At Istanbul, Turkey:


Robert Hilbert (12'), Simao (PK-78'), and Filip Holosko (90'+3) each scored once as Besiktas defeated visiting Sivasspor 3-1 in Sunday Turkish Super Lig action.

MLS: Rapids, SKC, Fire, Sounders, Quakes Grab Wins On Final Saturday

Seven games were played in Major League Soccer on Saturday, the next to last day of the regular season.


At Toronto:


Toronto FC  salvaged a 2-2 home draw with the New England Revolution.  Nick Soolsma (20') and Danny Koevermans (82') each tallied once for the Reds while Monzef Zerka (40') and Milton Caraglio (45') had the Revs' goals late in the first half, five minutes apart.


At Vancouver, British Columbia:


Jeff Larentowicz (59') and Wells Thompson (84') provided the scoring as the Colorado Rapids defeated the Vancouver Whitecaps, 2-1 on the road in come-from-behind fashion.


At Washington:


Matt Besler scored the only goal of the match in the 54th minute as Sporting Kansas City clinched the Eastern Conference regular-season crown with a 1-0 road win over DC United.


At Bridgeview, Illinois:


Diego Chaves scored the winning goal in the 79th minute as the Chicago Fire knocked off the visiting Columbus Crew 3-2.
