In Friday's quarterfinal-round match in the MLS is Back Tournament, after a 1-1 regulation draw, Mauricio Pereyra, Kyle Smith, Joao Moutinho (whose regulation-time equalizer in the 90th minute forced the shootout), Antonio Carlos, and Nani converted their spot kicks as Orlando City upended the Los Angeles Football Club 5-4 in the penalty-kick shootout.

MLS Is Back Tournament: Round Of 16 Closes Out As Loons, Timbers Take Out Buckeye State Clubs In PK Thrillers

At Bay Lake, Florida:

The MLS Is Back Tournament's Round of 16 concluded on Tuesday with two games.

Played at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.

Game #1:

After a 1-1 regulation draw, and with overtime dispensed with, Osvaldo Alonso, Jan Gregus, Aaron Schoenfeld, Raheem Edwards, and Chase Gasper all converted their spot kicks as Minnesota United took the penalty-kick shootout from the Columbus Crew 5-3.

Game #2:

In the Round-of-16 finale, the Portland Timbers, with Diego Valeri, Felipe Mora, Sebastian Blanco, and Jaroslaw Niezgoda converting their spot kicks, overcame goalkeeper Steve Clark's late regulation gaffe that enabled Jurgen Locadia to convert his game-tying penalty kick in the 81st minute to win the penalty-kick shootout 4-2 at FC Cincinnati's expense.

The aforementioned Mr. Clark did make a critical save on Mr. Locadia's PK in the shootout to help lift the Timbers into the quarterfinal round.

Game #1:

Magnus Eriksson converted two penalty kicks (49', 90'+6) as the San Jose Earthquakes dominated Real Salt Lake 5-2.

Game # 2:

Diego Rossi scored twice (PK-14', 82') as the Los Angeles Football Club ran roughshod over the Seattle Sounders 4-1.

The MLS Is Back Tournament's Round of 16 continued on Sunday with two games played at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.

Game #1:

Valentin Castellanos scored the game-winning goal at 55 minutes as New York City held off Toronto FC 3-1.

Game #2:

After 90 scoreless minutes of regulation, and with overtime dispensed with, Alan Pulido, Ilie, Gianluca Busio all converted their spot kicks as Sporting Kansas City took the penalty-kick shootout, 3-1 at the expense of the Vancouver Whitecaps.

At Cornella de Llobregat, Spain:

In their final Spanish Primera Division contest after 26 years (as they had already clinched relegation to the Segunda Division, or second tier of Spanish soccer), Espanyol held visiting Celta Vigo to a 0-0 stalemate.

The Parakeets finished dead last in the La Liga standings at 25 points, as they, Mallorca, and Leganes are  also going down a division.

The MLS Is Back Tournament resumed on Friday with three games contested at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Bay Lake, Florida.

GROUP C:

Federico Higuain's equalizer in the 72nd minute carried DC United to a 1-1 draw with the New England Revolution.

Adam Buska scored for the Revs in the 51st minute.

Group C Standings:

2. New England (GP: 2; GD: +1; PTS: 4)

GROUP C:

Federico Higuain (84') and Frederic Brillian (90'+1) each scored once as DC United, who played the entire second half with ten men, came back from two goals down to gain a 2-2 draw with Toronto FC in a contest that was rescheduled from Sunday.

Ayo Akinola scored both of the Reds' goals in the 12th and 44th minutes.
