Two series in the second qualifying round of the 2008-09 UEFA Champions League concluded Tuesday:
At Ventspils, Latvia:
Despite dropping game two on the road 2-1 against FK Ventspils, Norwegian club SK Brann advanced to the third qualifying round because that one goal they scored was the only away goal in the series, that, with the series squared on aggregate 2-2. Armann Bjornsson scored the critical away goal for Brann.
Brann will take on French third-place finishers Marseille in the third qualifying round, beginning next week in Bergen, Norway. The winner will advance to the group stage.
At Kaunas, Lithuania:
Linas Pilibaitas scored the late game---and series---winner to lift FBK Kaunas to a 2-1 game two home (and series on aggregate) win over Rangers.
The Lithuanians will face the winner of the Aalborg BK (Denmark)-FK Modrica (Bosnia-Herzegovina) series (which concludes Wednesday with the Danish side up 5-0 on aggregate) in the third qualifying round which begins next week.
