Europa League Match Day # 5: Citizens, Sporting Advance; Juve Eliminated

Match Day #5 in the Europa League commenced with twelve games on Wednesday.

Group A:

At Manchester, England:

Mario Balotelli scored twice (18', 65') as Manchester City locked a berth in the knockout stage, eliminating visiting Red Bull Salzburg 3-0.

At Poznan, Poland:

Artjoms Rudnevs scored at 12 minutes and it proved to be enough as Lech Poznan settled for a 1-1 home draw with Juventus in a snowstorm, enabling the Polish club to advance to the Round of 32 while eliminating the Italian giants in the process.

Sergio Koke scored twice (2', PK-51') as Aris Salonika knocked off Atletico Madrid 3-2 on the road to move into second place in the Group B standings.

At Trondheim, Norway:

On a bitter cold Norwegian night, Sidney Sam provided the lone goal of the match (35') as Bayer Leverkusen locked up the Group B title by eliminating hosts Rosenborg 1-0.

At Ghent, Belgium:

Fernando Wallace scored the game's only goal at 77 minutes as KAA Gent moved into second place in Group C with a 1-0 home win at Levski Sofia's expense, eliminating the Bulgarian club from European competition.

At Saint Petersburg, Russia:

Zenit Saint Petersburg maintained their perfect record in Europa League group stage play following their 3-1 home win over RSC Anderlecht, placing the Belgian club on the cusp of elimination from the tournament.  Aleksei Ionov (12'), Alexander Bukharov (65'), and Sszabolcs Huszti (88') each tallied once for the club that will finish atop Group G.

At Split, Croatio:

Ignacio Scocco (PK-51'), Monolas Kostas (61'), and Ismael Blanco (84') each delivered a second-half goal as AEK Athens moved into sole possession of second place in Group G with a 3-1 road win over Hajduk Split, eliminating the hosts from European competition.

Emmanuel Mayuka scored two late goals (81', 82') as BSC Young Boys secured a spot in the Round of 32 with a 4-2 home win over VfB Stuttgart, who had already locked up a berth in the knockout stage and won the group.

At Odense, Denmark:

Hans Henrik Andreasen scored a late equalizer (90') as Odense BK salvaged a 1-1 home draw with Getafe (Maestre Pedro Rios scoring at 17 minutes).  Both clubs were still eliminated from the tournament.

Denis Oliynyk scored the winning goal at 88 minutes as FC Metalist Kharkiv locked up a berth in the Round of 32 with a 2-1 home win over already-eliminated Debreceni VSC.

At Genoa, Italy:

Ola Toivonen scored twice (51', 90') as PSV Eindhoven came from behind on the road to defeat Sampdoria 2-1 and lock up a berth in the knockout stage while eliminating the Italian club from European competition in the process.
