Liepajas Metalurgs Drop Season Finale On Road

At Riga, Latvia:

Mareks Zuntners scored the only goal of the match in the 39th minute as Metta/Lu defeated visiting FK Liepajas Metalurgs 1-0 on Saturday in the Latvian Virsliga season regular-season finale for both clubs.

FK Liepajas Metalurgs will finish in fourth place in the league standings.

Daugava Daugavpils won the league title and will compete in the second round of qualifying for next season's UEFA Champions League.

Second place Skonto and third place Ventspils will take part in the first qualifying round for next season's Europa League.
The home win over Liepajas Metalurgs enabled Metta/LU to secure another season in the Latvian top flight and avoid the dreaded promotion/relegation playoff.  Daugava Riga, who finished ninth, will face-off against the second-placed finishers in the second-tiered Latvian First League for the right to stay in the top flight.

Gulbene 2005, who finished in the league basement, were directly relegated to the aforementioned Latvian First League.
