The quarterfinal round of the African Nations Cup commenced with two games played in South Africa on Saturday.
At Port Elizabeth:
Mubarak Wakaso scored both goals (PK-54', 90'+5) in Ghana's 2-0 win over the Cape Verde Islands.
At Durban:
After Seydou Keita's equalizer in the 58th minute enabled Mali to deadlock their match with South Africa at 1-1 through regulation time, then scoreless overtime, Cheick Diabate, Adama Tamboura, and Mahamane Traore all converted their spot kicks as the Eagles won the penalty-kick shootout 3-1 to advance to the semifinal round.
