Copa Libertadores Qualifying: Union Espanola, Junior Take Series Openers On Road; Atletico Tucuman and El Nacional Battle To 2-2 Game-One Draw

The second round of Copa Libertadores qualifying opened on Tuesday with the opening contest of each of three two-game series.

At Montevideo, Uruguay:

Sebastian Jaime scored the winning goal in the 88th minute as Union Espanola of Chile took match one of their series with CA Cerro 3-2 on the road.

At Valencia, Venezuela:

Robinson Aponza scored the only goal of Colombia's Junior FC's series-opening win on the road over Carabobo in the 31st minute.

At Tucuman, Argentina:

Felix Borja (39') and Bryan De Jesus (83') each scored once as Ecuador's El Nacional gained a series-opening 2-2 road draw with Atletico Tucuman.  Fernando Zampedri (2') and David Barbona (77') each tallied once for the hosts.

AFC Champions League Qualifying

Five games were played on Tuesday as the second preliminary round for AFC Champions League group-stage berths came to a close.

EAST ZONE:

At Pathum Thani, Thailand:

After a 1-1 draw through 120 minute, with each club scoring once during overtime, Mohd Rahim (who had scored in the 108th minute), Fadhli Shas, Amirul Zainal, Ahmad Bakri, and Nazmi Faiz each converted a spot kick as Malaysia's Johor Darul Ta'zim won the penalty kick shootout 5-4 on the road over Bangkok United.

At Sukhothai, Thailand:

Admir Adrovic scored twice (PK-61', 74') as Sukhothai destroyed visiting Yadanarbon of Burma (or is it Myanmar?) 5-0.

At Brisbane, Australia:

Brandon Borrello delivered a quadruple (12', 26', 30', 80') and Manuel Arana added a double (35', 65') as the Brisbane Roar annihilated visiting Global from the Philippines 6-0.



WEST ZONE:

At Amman, Jordan:

Baha' Faisal Mohammad Seif's successfully-converted penalty kick in the 65th minute carried Al-Wihdat to a 2-1 victory over visiting Bengaluru FC from India 2-1.

At Tashkent, Uzbekistan:

Shakhboz Erkinov (16'), Igor Golban (26'), Doniyorjon Narzullaev (77'), and Dragan Ceran (90'+1) each scored once as Nasaf Qarshi demolished visiting Al-Hidd (Qatar) 4-0.

OFC Champions League Qualifying: Puaikura Advance To Group Stage; Utulei Youth Eliminating

The qualifying round for OFC Champions League continued on Tuesday with two games, both contested at Loto-Tonga Soka Centre in Nuku'alofa, Tonga.

In the opener, Kris Carpenter (29') and Maro Bonsu-Maro (30') each scored a goal in the first half-hour, a minute apart, as Puaikura FC from the Cook Islands locked up a berth in the group stage by defeating Lupe o la Soaga  of Samoa 2-1.

In the nightcap, Halapua Falepapalangi scored the winning goal in the 50th minute as Tonga's Veitongo defeated Utulei Youth 3-1, eliminating the club from American Samoa in the process.

African Nations Cup: Black Stars, Pharaohs Advance To Semifinals

Two games were contested in Gabon on Sunday as the quarterfinal round of the African Nations Cup concluded.

At Oyem:

Andre Ayew's penalty kick in the 78th minute provided the game winner as Ghana defeated the Democratic Republic of the Congo 2-1.

At Port-Gentil:

Kahraba delivered the only goal of the match in the 88th minute as Egypt defeated Morocco 1-0.

The semifinal round will commence on Wednesday at Libreville with Burkina Faso taking on Egypt and will conclude on Thursday in Franceville as Cameroon will battle Ghana.

The winners will play in next Sunday's final in Libreville.

African Nations Cup: Burkina Faso Advance To Semifinals

The quarterfinal round of the African Nations Cup commenced on Saturday with two games played in Gabon.

At Libreville:

Aristide Bance (81') and Prejuce Makoulma (85') each scored a late goal as Burkina Faso blanked Tunisia 2-0.

At Franceville:

After 120 scoreless minutes, Benjamin Moukandjo, Ambroise Oyongo, Adolphe Teikeu, Jacques Zoua, and Vincent Aboubakar all converted their spot kicks as Cameroon outlasted Senegal 5-4 in the penalty kick shootout to advance to the semifinal round.

Copa Libertadores Qualifying: Montevideo Wanderers, Independiente del Valle, Deportivo Capiata Advance To Second Qualifying Round

Three games were contested on Friday as the opening round of Copa Libertadores qualifying concluded.

At Montevideo, Uruguay:

Sergio Blanco scored twice (7', PK-53') as Montevideo Wanderers more than made up for their series-opening defeat by dominating visiting Club Universitario 5-2 in game two and ousting the Bolivian club 7-5 on aggregate.  Wanderers will take on another club fro Bolivar, The Strongest, in a two-game second qualifying round series which opens this coming Thursday in Montevideo.

At Sangolqui, Ecuador:

Goals from Michael Estrada (62') and Gabriel Cortez (90'+3) enabled Independiente del Valle to gain a 2-2 game-two home draw with Deportivo Municipal and win their series with the Peruvian club 3-2 on aggregate.  The Ecuadorian club will take on Paraguay's Club Olimpia, which opens this coming Thursday at Sangolqui.

At San Cristobal, Venezuela:

A 0-0 game-two road deadlock with Deportivo Táchira carried Paraguay's Deportivo Capiata to a 1-0 aggregate series victory and a berth in the second qualifying round opposite Peru's Universitario.  The two-game series will open this coming Thursday in Capiata, Paraguay.

OFC Champions League Qualifying: Lupe o le Soaga, Puaikura Open With Saturday Wins

Two games were contested on Saturday at Loto-Tonga Stadium in Nuku'alofa, Tonga as the qualifying round for an available OFC Champions League group-stage berth commenced.

In the opener, Lapalapa Toni scored twice (35', 52') as Lupe o le Soaga of Samoa held off American Samoa's Utulei Youth 4-3.

In the nightcap, Paul Rhodes scored twice (25', 90') as Puaikura (Cook Islands) demolished the host country's Veitongo 4-0.

Qualifying Group Standings:

1. Puaikura FC (GP: 1; GD: +4; PTS: 3)
2. Lupe o le Soaga (GP: 1; GD: +1; PTS: 3)

African Nations Cup: Pharoahs Join Black Stars In Quarterfinals As Group Stage Ends

Group stage came to a conclusion in the African Nations Cup on Wednesday with two Group D games contested in Gabon.

At Port-Gentil:

Mohamed Salah scored the only goal of the match in the 11th minute as Egypt defeated Ghana 1-0 as both teams will be playing in the quarterfinal round.

At Oyem:

Yves Bissouma's equalizer in the 73rd minute to carry Mali to a 1-1 draw with Uganda in what was the tournament finale for both squads.  Farouk Miya scored for the Cranes in the 70th minute.

Final Group D Standings:

1. Egypt (GP: 3; GD: +2; PTS: 7)
2. Ghana (GP: 3; GD: +1; PTS: 6)
3. Mali (GP: 3; GD: -1; PTS: 2)
4. Uganda (GP: 3; GD: -2; PTS: 1)

Egypt and Ghana advanced to the quarterfinal round.

The quarterfinal round will open on Saturday with two games.  Burkina Faso will take on Tunisia in Libreville, then Senegal will face Cameroon in Franceville.

On Sunday, the Democratic Republic of the Congo will battle Ghana in Oyem.  Then, in Port-Gentil, Egypt will go up against Morocco.

AFC Champions League: OT Win For Kitchee In 2nd Preliminary Round

At Hong Kong:

Alex Tayo Akande (109') and Lam Ka Wai (120'+3) each scored an overtime goal on Wednesday as Kitchee SC defeated visiting Ha Hoi FC of Vietnam 3-2 in the opening East Region contest of Preliminary Round #2 of the AFC Champions League.

Next up for the club from Hong Kong, a trip to Ulsan, South Korea for an East Region third preliminary round contest against Ulsan Hyundai on February 7.

African Nations Cup: Leopards, Morocco Advance To Quarterfinals

Two games were played on Tuesday in Gabon as action from Group  C of the African Nations Cup concluded.

At Oyem:

Rachid Alioui scored the only goal of the match in the 64th minute as Morocco advanced to the quarterfinal round after their 1-0 victory over Ivory Coast.

At Port-Gentil:

Firmin Ndombe Mubele scored the winning goal in the 54th minute as the Democratic Republic of the Congo advanced to the quarterfinals---and locked up the Group C crown---following their 3-1 victory over Togo.

Final Group C Standings:

1. Democratic Republic of the Congo (GP: 3; GD: +3; PTS: 7)
2. Morocco (GP: 3; GD: +2; PTS: 6)

AFC Champions League: Global Victory To Begin Qualification Process

At Manila, Philippines:

Ahmad Azzawi (61') and Misagh Bahadoran (73') each scored once on Tuesday as Global FC blanked visiting Tampines Rovers of Singapore 2-0 in Preliminary Round One as AFC Champions League qualifying commenced.

The Filipino club will now take on Australia's Brisbane Roar in another East Regional one-game playoff, which is set to take place next Tuesday.

Copa Libertadores: Universitario, Independiente del Valle, Deportivo Capiata Gain Series-Opening Wins As Qualifying Begins

Three games were contested on Monday as the opening round of Copa Libertadores qualifying commenced.

At Sucre, Bolivia:

Aldo Velsasco scored the winning goal in the 65th minute as Universitario held off visiting Montevideo Wanderers 3-2 in the opening contest of their two-game series.

At Lima, Peru:

Michael Estrada scored the only goal of Independiente del Valle's 1-0 series-opening road victory over Deportivo Municipal in the ninth minute.

At Capiata, Paraguay:

Hugo Lusardi's goal in the opening minute of first-half stoppage time lifted Deportivo Capiati to a series-opening 1-0 home win over Deportivo Tachira.

African Nations Cup: Tunisia To Join Senegal In Quarterfinals

Two games were played on Monday in the African Nations Cup as action from Group B came to a close in Gabon.

At Franceville:

Islam Slimani scored twice (10', 52') as Algeria gained a 2-2 draw with Senegal (whose goals came courtesy of Papkouli Diop and Moussa Sow in the 43rd and 53rd minutes, respectively).

At Libreville:

Taha Yassine Khenissi scored the game-winning goal in the 36th minute as Tunisia doubled up Zimbabwe 4-2 to lock up a berth in the quarterfinal round.

Final Group B Standings:

1. Senegal (GP: 3; GD: +4; PTS: 7)
2. Tunisia (GP: 3; GD: +6; PTS: 6)

African Nations Cup: Cameroon, Burkina Faso Advance To Quarterfinals; Hosts Eliminated

The final cycle of group-stage games in the African Nations Cup commenced on Sunday with two contests in Group A in Gabon.

At Libreville:

A 0-0 stalemate between Cameroon and host nation Gabon sent the Indomitable Lions into the quarterfinal round and knocked the home-standing Panthers out of the tournament.

At Franceville:

Rudinilson Silva (OG-12') and Bertrand Traore (58') produced the goals as Burkina Faso advanced to the quarterfinals after they blanked (and eliminated) Guinea-Bissau 2-0.

Final Group A Standings:

1. Burkina Faso (GP: 3; GD: +2; PTS: 5)
2. Cameroon (GP: 3; GD: +1; PTS: 5)

Two more games were played on Saturday in Group D of the African Nations Cup with both contests taking place at Port-Gentil stadium in Port-Gentil, Gabon.

In the opener, Asamoah Gyan scored the only goal of the match in the 21st minute as Ghana locked up a berth in the quarterfinal round following their 1-0 victory over Mali.

In the nightcap, Abdallah Said scored the game's lone tally in the 89th minute as Egypt knocked Uganda out of the tournament by beating the Cranes 1-0.

African Nations Cup: Ivory Coast and DRC Draw; Morocco Too Much For Togo

Two games in Group C of the African Nations Cup were contested on Friday at Oyem Stadium in Oyem, Gabon.

In the opener, Wilfried Bony (26') and Sereso Geoffroy Gonzaroua Die (67') each scored once as Ivory Coast gained a 2-2 draw with the Democratic Republic of the Congo.  Neeskens Kebano (9') and Junior Kabananga (28') each scored once for the Leopards.

In the nightcap, Romain Saiss scored the winning goal in the 21st minute as Morocco defeated Togo 3-1.

In the opener, Naim Sliti provided the game winner with his successfully-executed penalty kick in the 60th minute as Tunisia defeated Algeria 2-1.

The second cycle of African Nations Cup group-stage contests commenced on Wednesday with two games in Group A, both played at Angondje Stadium in Libreville, Gabon.

In the opener, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's successfully-converted penalty kick in the 38th minute lifted hosts Gabon to a 1-1 draw with Burkina Faso, whose tally came in the 23rd minute by Prejuce Nakoulma.

In the nightcap, Michael Ngadeu-Ngadjui scored the winning goal in the 78th minute to propel Cameroon to a 2-1 victory over Guinea-Bissau.

African Nations Cup play continued on Sunday with two Group B contests, both taking place at Franceville Stadium in Franceville, Gabon.

In the opener, Riyad Mahrez scored twice (12', 82') to carry Algeria to a 2-2 draw with Zimbabwe.  Kudakwashe Mahachi (17') and Nyasha Mushekwi (PK-29') provided the scoring for the Warriors.

In the nightcap, Sadio Mane (PK-10') and Kara Mbodji (30') each scored once in the opening half-hour as Senegal blanked Tunisia 2-0.

The 2017 edition of the African Nations Cup opened on Saturday with two games played at Stade de l'Amitie in Libreville,  Gabon, both in Group A.

In the opener, Juary Soares' equalizer in the opening minute of second-half stoppage time lifted Guinea-Bissau to a 1-1 draw with host nation Gabon.  Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored for Les Pantheres in the 52nd minute.

In the nightcap, Issoufou Dayo's equalizer in the 75th minute lifted Burkina Faso to a 1-1 draw with Cameroon. Benjamin Moukandjou scored for The Indomitable Lions in the 35th minute.

Expansion

The World Cup is set to expand to 48 teams beginning with the 2026 tournament.

32 teams will take part in the 2018 (Russia) and 2022 (Qatar) tournaments, as have been the case since 1998 (France, which was won by the host nation).

Maybe now, Oceania will have its' own automatic berth.
