It became offical on Monday.

The Republic will start top-flight play in 2022, the same year as the new St. Louis entry.

Looks Like St. Louis Will Get An MLS Expansion Club

It'll be the first time that the Gateway City will have a top-flight outdoor soccer club since the departure of the St. Louis Stars of the original NASL left for Anaheim after the 1977 season.

The Stars played in the NASL from 1968 (after coming over from the NPSL following its' merger with the United Soccer Association) through 1977.

In Anaheim, the California Surf lasted four years before folding after the 1981 season.

That's the official name of the Peach City's MLS expansion club, which is set to start play in 2017.

MLS Expansion: Now, It's The Twin Cities' Turn

Minnesota United FC is slated to begin MLS play in 2018.  The twin cities had two cracks at NASL soccer, the first, the ex-Denver Dynamos----the Minnesota Kicks----played six years at Bloomington's old Metropolitan Stadium (1976-81) alongside the Twins and Vikings, but went under after the 1981 season as the NASL was gradually deteriorating.  The second effort, the Minnesota Strikers, came up from Fort Lauderdale in 1984, perhaps with an eye on playing in the original MISL.  They were one of only two teams that were gearing up for the 1985 season when the original NASL went under.

Goats' Replacement In Los Angeles

That was the word that was announced on Thursday as Major League Soccer announced that a new expansion club will start play in the City of Angels (or at least in the vicinity of Los Angeles) beginning in 2017.

For the time being, the club is being called the Los Angeles Football Club.

This Happened Two Weeks Ago

David Beckham exercised his option and will become one of the owners of a new Major League Soccer expansion club based in Miami, currently with no nickname, to begin play in 2017.

Nicknames being bandied about include Vice and Current.  

Miami's original MLS club, the Miami Fusion, was contracted in January, 2002, after four years.
