Bhoys Join Rossoneri In Knockout Stage Dispite Defeat; Benfica To UEFA Cup

Because of AC Milan's participation in the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup, starting this coming weekend in Japan, Group D group play in the 2007-08 UEFA Champions League concluded on Tuesday.

At Milan:

Filippo Inzaghi set a new European club competition record with his goal in the 70th minute, and that propelled AC Milan to a 1-0 home win over Celtic that propelled the already-knockout-round-bound Rossoneri into a first-place finish in Group D. Even with the loss, the visiting Bhoys still qualified for the sweet 16.

At Donetsk, Ukraine:

Oscar Cardoza's double (6', 22') propelled SL Benfica to a 2-1 road win over Shakhtar Donetsk. The Ukrainian club, who entered Tuesday with a shot at overtaking Celtic and moving into the Champions League's knock-out stage, instead found themselves knocked out of European competition altogether, as the visiting Portuguese side moved on to the final 32 of the UEFA Cup.
