With each team having garnered three points and neither club scoring a goal on the road in the series, 30 minutes of what proved to be scoreless overtime were played. Then, Alecsandro, Guilherme Mihomem Gusmao, Jo, and Leandro Silva all converted their spot kicks as the Brazilian club won the penalty-kick shootout 4-3 and their first-ever South American club championship. The Rooster will play in December's FIFA Club World Cup, which is slated to take place in Morocco.

Alejandro Silva Gonzalez (23') and Wilson Pittoni (90'+4) provided the scoring on Wednesday night as Club Olimpia blanked visiting Atletico Minerio 2-0 in the opening contest of the Copa Libertadores final. The second contest will take place next Wednesday at Belo Horizonte, Brazil. The winning club will represent COMNEBOL (South America's soccer confederation) in this December's FIFA Club World Cup, scheduled to be played in Morocco.

Bernard Anicio Caldeira Duarte (18') and Jo (27') each scored a goal on Wednesday to carry Atletico Mineiro to a 2-2 Brazilian Serie A road draw with Santos as the guests find themselves in second place in the league standings, nine points in back of Fluminense. Ezequiel Miralles (1') and Neymar (11') provided the scoring for the hosts.
