Wayne Rooney scored twice in the first half (10', 40') as Manchester United held off ten-man Manchester City on the road and dethroned the defending champions 3-2 on the road.
At London:
Ramires scored twice in the final ten minutes (84', 86') to help Chelsea put away visiting Portsmouth (League Championship) 4-0.
At Sheffield, England:
Chris O'Grady scored the only goal of the match in the 88th minute as Sheffield Wednesday (League One) defeated visiting West Ham United (League Championship) 1-0. Owls goalkeeper Nicky Weaver saved a penalty kick from the Hammers' Sam Baldock in the 49th minute to preserve the shutout.
At Peterborough, England:
Sebastian Larsson (48') and James McClean (58') each scored a goal in the second half as Sunderland defeated League Championship club Peterborough United 2-0 on the road.
