In the first contest between the two newest expansion clubs, Josef Martinez produced his club's first-ever hat trick (3', 27', 75') while Miguel Almiron added a double (13', 52') as Atlanta United---in the snow---destroyed Minnesota United 6-1 on the road, ruining the Loons' home opener.
At Carson, California:
Diego Chara scored the only goal of the match in the seventh minute as the Portland Timbers---for the first time in their MLS history---opened a season with two wins after defeating the home-standing (and ten-man) Los Angeles Galaxy 1-0.
