UEFA Champions League Group D: Galaticos Blow Out Ajax; Dutch Champs Eliminated Thanks Also To Lyon's Annihilation Of Dinamo Zagreb

Two games were played in Group D on Wednesday as UEFA Champions League group-stage action concluded.


At Amsterdam, Netherlands:


Jose Callejon


Jose Callejon scored twice (14', 90'+2, that's him here) as Real Madrid dominated Ajax Amsterdam 3-0 on the road.


At Zagreb, Croatia:


Bafetimi Gomis


Bafetimbi Gomis delivered a quadruple (45', 48', 52', 70', three of the goals during a six-goal second-half blitz.  Yes, that's him shown here) as Lyon annihilated Dinamo Zagreb 7-1 on the road, and, with Ajax's collapse against Real Madrid, and with their superior goal differential (the two clubs drew twice against each other), advanced to the Champions League's group stage and relegated the Dutch club into the Europa League.


FINAL GROUP D STANDINGS:


1. Real Madrid (GP: 6; GD: +17; PTS: 18)
2. Lyon (GP: 6; GD: +2; PTS: 8)
3. Ajax Amsterdam (GP: 6; GD: 0; PTS: 8)
4. Dinamo Zagreb (GP: 6; GD: -19; PTS: 0)


Real Madrid and Lyon advanced to the knockout stage of the Champions League, while their final-day collapse forced Ajax Amsterdam into the Europa League's Round of 32.  After one of the worst group-stage performances in Champions League history, Dinamo Zagreb's European campaign came to a merciful conclusion

UEFA Champions League Group D: Galacticos Demolish Dinamo Zagreb; Scoreless Road Draw Keeps Ajax In Driver's Seat For Second Place

Two games were played on Tuesday as Group D action in the UEFA Champions League resumed.


At Madrid:


Karim Benzema


Karim Benzema (2', 66', he's pictured here celebrating with teammates after his first goal) and Jose Callejon (6', 49') each scored twice as Real Madrid delivered a brass knuckling to visiting Dinamo Zagreb, 6-2, eliminating the Croatian club from European competition.


At Lyon, France:


A 0-0 home deadlock with Ajax Amsterdam has placed Lyon on the brink of elimination from the tournament.  Goalkeepers Hugo Lloris of Lyon (pictured here) and Kenneth Vermeer of Ajax each recorded a shutout.

UEFA Champions League Group D: Galacticos Clinch Berth In Round Of 16; Ajax Smash Dinamo Zagreb

Wednesday saw two Group D games played in the UEFA Champions League.

At Lyon, France:


Cristiano Ronaldo converts a penalty to put Real Madrid 2-0 up against Lyon


Cristiano Ronaldo provided all the scoring (24', PK-69, shown here) as Real Madrid locked up a berth in the knockout stage following their 2-0 road win over Lyon.

At Amsterdam, Netherlands:


Gregory van der Wiel fires Ajax into the lead against Dinamo Zagreb


Gregory van der Wiel (20', shown here), Miralem Sulejami (25'), Siem de Jong (65'), and Nicolas Lodeiro (90'+2) each delivered a goal as Ajax Amsterdam demolished visiting Dinamo Zagreb 4-0, knocking the Croatian club out of the tournament.

UEFA Champions League Group D: Galacticos Blast Lyon; Ajax Get Win On Road

Two Group D games were played in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday.


At Madrid:


Karim Benzema put Real Madrid in front


Karim Benzema (19', that's him celebrating), Sami Khedira (47'), and Sergio Ramo (81') each scored once as Real Madrid demolished visiting Lyon 4-0.


At Zagreb, Croatia:


Joy for Ajax after Derk Boerrigter (21) netted


Derk Boerrigter (49', that's him celebrating with teammates) and Christian Eriksen (90') each tallied once as Ajax Amsterdam blanked Dinamo Zagreb 2-0 on the road.

UEFA Champions League Group D: Galacticos and Lyon Rack Up Home Shutout Wins

Two games were played in Group D on Tuesday as UEFA Champions League action continued.


At Lyon, France:


Bafetimbi Gomis celebrates his exquisite chipped goal against Zagreb.


Bafetimbi Gomis (23', that's him celebrating) and Bakary Kone (42') provided the goals that carried Lyon to a 2-0 home win over Dinamo Zagreb.


At Madrid:


Real Madrid celebrate Cristiano Ronaldo's goal.


Cristiano Ronaldo (25', that's him celebrating), Kaka (41'), and Karim Benzema (49') each tallied once as Real Madrid dominated visiting Ajax Amsterdam 3-0.

UEFA Champions League Group D: Galacticos Hold Off Dinamo Zagreb; Ajax and Lyon Draw

Action in Group D play in the UEFA Champions League commenced with two games on Wednesday.

At Zagreb, Croatia:


Real Madrid's players celebrate Angel Di Mari's goal against Dinamo Zagreb


Angel di Maria, shown above being mobbed by teammates,  scored the only goal of the match in the 53rd minute as Real Madrid shut out Dinamo Zagreb 1-0 on the road.
