UEFA Champions League Group D: Galaticos Blow Out Ajax; Dutch Champs Eliminated Thanks Also To Lyon's Annihilation Of Dinamo Zagreb

Two games were played in Group D on Wednesday as UEFA Champions League group-stage action concluded.

At Amsterdam, Netherlands:

Jose Callejon

Jose Callejon scored twice (14', 90'+2, that's him here) as Real Madrid dominated Ajax Amsterdam 3-0 on the road.

At Zagreb, Croatia:

Bafetimi Gomis

Bafetimbi Gomis delivered a quadruple (45', 48', 52', 70', three of the goals during a six-goal second-half blitz.  Yes, that's him shown here) as Lyon annihilated Dinamo Zagreb 7-1 on the road, and, with Ajax's collapse against Real Madrid, and with their superior goal differential (the two clubs drew twice against each other), advanced to the Champions League's group stage and relegated the Dutch club into the Europa League.

FINAL GROUP D STANDINGS:

1. Real Madrid (GP: 6; GD: +17; PTS: 18)
2. Lyon (GP: 6; GD: +2; PTS: 8)
3. Ajax Amsterdam (GP: 6; GD: 0; PTS: 8)
4. Dinamo Zagreb (GP: 6; GD: -19; PTS: 0)

Real Madrid and Lyon advanced to the knockout stage of the Champions League, while their final-day collapse forced Ajax Amsterdam into the Europa League's Round of 32.  After one of the worst group-stage performances in Champions League history, Dinamo Zagreb's European campaign came to a merciful conclusion
