Wolverhampton Wanderers Classic: 1949 FA Cup Championship

Let's go back to 1949 as Wolverhampton Wanderers won the FA Cup final at the original Wembley Stadium in London, as Wolves defeated second-division club Leicester City 3-1.
 

It would be Wolverhampton's third FA Cup championship (to go with triumphs in 1893 and 1908.  They would win it again in 1960).

 

DAGGERS WIN PROMOTION TO ENGLAND'S LEAGUE ONE

At London:

Paul Benson (38'), Danny Green (56'), and game-winning scorer Jon Nurse (70') provided the goals as Dagenham & Redbridge defeated Rotherham United 3-2 on Sunday at Wembley Stadium in the final of the League Two promotion playoffs.  The Daggers will play in the third level of English soccer for the first time in their 18-year history. They will join fellow promotees Notts County, AFC Bournemouth, and Rochdale in League One next season.

Impact-Whitecaps Draw Delivers Nutrilite Title For TFC

At Montreal:

Philippe Billy's equalizer at 62 minutes enabled the Montreal Impact to salvage a 1-1 home draw with the Vancouver Whitecaps (Ansu Toure scoring at 50 minutes) this past Wednesday in Nutrilite Canadian Championship play, resulting in Toronto FC winning the tournament and advancing to the qualifying round for next season's CONCACAF Champions League.

MLS: Galaxy Top Crew To Become League's Last Unbeaten Club; Philadelphia Gets First Road Win; DCU, Revs, Rapids, RSL, TCF Get Wins, Too

Seven games were contested Saturday in Major League Soccer.

At Columbus, Ohio:

Thanks to goals from Michael Stephens (10') and Tristan Bowen (88'), the Los Angeles Galaxy became the league's lone remaining unbeaten club with their 2-0 road win over the Columbus Crew.

At Washington:

Carey Talley's successful penalty kick at 89 minutes proved to be the game winner as DC United defeated visiting Chivas USA 3-2.

At Foxborough, Massachusetts:

Zack Schilawski's goal at 80 minutes carried the New England Revolution to a 3-2 home win over the New York Red Bulls.  The Revs snapped a seven-game winless streak while the Red Bulls dropped their fourth consecutive league contest.


At Houston:


Second-half substitute Danny Mwnaga scored the game-winning goal during second-half stoppage time (90'+3) as the Philadelphia Union picked up their first-ever road win, 3-2 over the Houston Dynamo.


At Commerce City, Colorado:


Conor Casey scored the lone goal of the match (63') as the Colorado Rapids defeated the visiting Seattle Sounders 1-0.


At Sandy, Utah:


Fabian Espindola (30'), Alvaro Saborio (33'), Robbie Russell (85'), and Ned Grabavoy (90') each tallied once as Real Salt Lake picked up their franchise record-setting fifth straight win, 4-1 over the visiting Kansas City Wizards.


At Santa Clara, California:


Dwayne De Rosario scored twice in the second half (66', 90') as Toronto FC racked up their first road win of the season, 3-1 over the San Jose Earthquakes.

Comeback Win For Team USA

At Philadelphia:

Jozy Altidore (59') and Clint Dempsey (75') each scored a goal in the second half as the United States came from behind to defeat visiting Turkey 2-1 Saturday in an international exhibition match.  The Americans will play Australia next Saturday at Roodepoort, South Africa in their final warmup before they begin Group C play the following Saturday in the World Cup at Rustenburg, South Africa against England.

LIONS WIN PROMOTION BACK TO LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP IN ENGLAND

At London:

Paul Robinson scored the only goal of the match at 39 minutes as Millwall defeated Swindon Town 1-0 on Saturday to win the final of the English League One promotion final at Wembley Stadium.  The Lions won promotion to the League Championship, joining already-promoted Norwich City and Leeds United.  They last played in the second level of English soccer in 2006.

France Selected To Host Euro 2016

At Geneva, Switzerland:

France was selected Friday to host the 2016 European Championships.  That edition will see the finals expand from 16 to 24 teams.  The 2012 edition is scheduled to take place in Poland and Ukraine.  France had hosted the event in 1984.

Saint Louis Athletica: Rest In Peace

The St. Louis entry in Women's Professional Soccer called it quits on Thursday due to financial problems.  This was the second WPS club to close up shop since the end of their inaugural season last year, with the Los Angeles Sol having ceased operations earlier this calendar year.

MLS: Brian McBride Equalizer Salvages Home Draw For Fire

At Bridgeview, Illinois:

In the lone Thursday Major League Soccer contest, Brian McBride's goal at 40 minutes enabled the Chicago Fire to salvage a 1-1 home stalemate with FC Dallas.  David Arturo Ferreira scored at 6 minutes for the Hoops.

Toluca Capture Bicentenario Crown After Penalty-Kick Shootout

At Toluca, Mexico:

Following the 2-2 opening match of their two-game Mexican Bicentenario playoff final at Torreon, game two on Sunday ended in regulation time as a 0-0 deadlock, followed by 30 scoreless minutes of overtime.  In the penalty-kick shootout that followed, Vladimir Marin, Diego Novaretti, Martin Romagnoli, and Edgar Duenas each converted as Toluca outlasted visiting Santos Laguna 4-3 to win the Mexican Premier division playoff championship.

MLS: TFC, Quakes, and Dynamo Register Shutout Wins; RSL Top Goats To End Road Skid

Four games were contested on Saturday in Major League Soccer.

At Toronto:

Chad Barrett scored in the 53rd minute as Toronto FC defeated the visiting New England Revolution 1-0.

At Seattle:

Chris Wondolowski scored the only goal of the match at 12 minutes and Joe Cannon registered his fourth consecutive shutout as the San Jose Earthquakes defeated the Seattle Sounders 1-0 on the road.

At Houston:

Danny Cruz (9') and Dominic Oduro (54') each scored once as the Houston Dynamo blanked visiting and struggling DC United 2-0.


At Carson, California:


Fabian Espindola scored the game winner at 88 minutes as Real Salt Lake ended a three-game road losing streak with a 2-1 win over Chivas USA.

DIEGO'S DOUBLE NETS FIRST EUROPEAN CLUB TITLE SINCE 1965 FOR NERAZZURRI

At Madrid:

Diego Milito scored both goals (35', 70', that's him celebrating above) as Inter Milan won their first European club championship since 1965 as the Nerazzurri won the UEFA Champions League final 2-0 Saturday over Bayern Munich.  It was Inter's third continental crown overall (1964. 1965, 2010).  For Jose Mourinho, it was his second title as a coach, having led FC Porto to the crown in 2004.  With the win, Inter Milan wound up with the treble for the season, the Serie A title, the Coppa Italia triumph over AS Roma, and now, the European club championship.  They will play this coming December in the FIFA Club World Cup in the United Arab Emirates.

SEASIDERS WIN PROMOTION TO PREMIER LEAGUE

At London:

After equalizers from Charlie Adam (13') and Gary Taylor-Fletcher (41'), Brett Ormerod scored the winning goal at 45 minutes as Blackpool defeated Cardiff City 3-2 Saturday in the final of the English League Championship promotion final at Wembley Stadium.  The Seasiders gain promotion to the English Premier League as they will be playing next season in the top flight of English Soccer for the first time since 1971.

Santos Laguna and Toluca Draw In Opener Of Bicentenario Final

At Torreon, Mexico:

Santos Laguna settled for a 2-2 home draw with Toluca in game one of the two-game final of Mexico's Bicentenario playoffs on Thursday.  The hosts got goals from Carlos Darwin Quintero (13') and Vincente Vuoso (84'), while the visitors got their tallies courtesy of Diego Novaretti (22') and Zinha (67').  The two-game series will conclude on Sunday in Toluca, Mexico.  Both teams have clinched berths in the 2010-11 CONCACAF Champions League.  The winner will directly enter the group stage with the runners-up going to the qualifying round.

Copa Libertadores: Estudiantes Detroned As Internacional Advance To Semifinals; Universidad de Chile, Too

The quarterfinal round of the Copa Libertadores concluded with two games on Thursday.

At Quilmes, Argentina:

Giuliano scored a critical away goal at 88 minutes as Internacional, despite dropping a 2-1 road decision in game two to Estudiantes, still advanced to the semifinal round, as even though the two clubs were level on points (three apiece) and on goal differential (zero), the Brazilian club had the away goals advantage, 1-0.  Next, Internacional will face off in a two-match semifinal series against fellow Brazilian club Sao Paulo.

At Santiago, Chile:


Universidad de Chile, despite dropping a 2-1 home decision to  Flamengo in game two of their two-match quarterfinal series, still won the series on away goals.  Each team had three points and were level on goal differential, but the Chilean club scored more away goals 3-2.  Walter Montillo scored what proved to be the series-clinching goal for Universidad at 73 minutes.

League Two Playoffs (England): Daggers Advance To Promotion Final

At Morecambe, England:

Despite dropping a 2-1 road decision in game two to Morecambe, Dagenham & Redbridge won their English League Two promotion playoff semifinal series 7-2 on aggregate, with Paul Benson scoring for the Daggers at 85 minutes.  D & R will face off against Rotherham United on May 30 at Wembley Stadium in London for the right to play in League One next season.

Toronto FC Closing In On Qualifying Berth For CONCACAF Champions League

The Nutrilite Canadian Championship, which got under way on April 28, is nearing its' conclusion.

April 28, At Toronto:

Goals from Ty Hardin (12') and Chad Barrett (61') carried Toronto FC past the Montreal Impact 2-0 in the tournament opener.

May 5, at Burnaby, British Columbia:

Marcus Haber's penalty kick at 81 minutes enabled the Vancouver Whitecaps to salvage a 1-1 home draw with the Montreal Impact, whose goal came from Peter Byers at 31 minutes.


May 12, at Montreal:


Dwayne De Rosario scored the only goal of the match at 73 minutes as Toronto FC defeated the visiting Montreal Impact 1-0.

At Sao Paulo, Brazil:

Herenanes (23') and Dogaberto (52') each tallied once as Sao Paulo defeated Cruzeiro 2-0 for a second time in the quarterfinal round of the Copa Libertadores, this time at home, enabling them to win their two-match set 6 points to 0.  Sao Paulo will face the winner of Estudiantes-Internacional in the semifinal round.

Sevillistos Blank Atletico To Cop King's Cup

At Barcelona:

Trinidad Diego Capel (5') and Gonzalez Jesus Navas (90') each tallied once as Sevilla blanked Atletico Madrid 2-0 to win the final of the Copa del Rey, Spain's big domestic cup competition on Wednesday.  This marked the fifth King's Cup crown for the Sevillistos.

Copa Libertadores: Goats Reach Semis Despite Two-Goal Setback At Asuncion

At Asuncion, Paraguay:

Despite dropping a 2-0 road decision Tuesday night (goals from Adalberto Roman at 19 minutes and Manuel Macial at 67 minutes), Chivas de Guadalajara still won their two-match quarterfinal-round series with Club Libertad due to better goal differential (+1 to -1) even though each team wound up with three points.  Next for the Goats, a two-match semifinal series against the Flamengo-Universidad de Chile winner.

League One Playoffs (England): Robins One Win Away From Promotion To League Championship After PK Shootout Thriller

At London:

Daniel Ward's goal at 74 minutes enabled Swindon Town to level their two-match series with Charlton Athletic at 3-3 on aggregate, even though the Addicks took the second game 2-1 in regulation.  After 30 scoreless overtime minutes, Jon-Paul McGovern, Charlie Austin, Kevin Amenkwaah, Daniel Ward, and Stephen Darby each made his penalty kick as the visiting Robins took the shootout 5-4.  The Robins will battle the Huddersfield Town-Millwall winner at London's Wembley Stadium on May 29 in the final for the right to play next season in the League Championship, joining already-promoted Norwich City and Leeds United.

At Augsburg, Germany:

Ilkay Gundogan (34') and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting (PK-63') each scored once as FC Nuremberg maintained their German Bundesliga status with a 2-0 road win over second-vision FC Augsburg in game two of their two-game promotion/relegation playoff and a 3-0 aggregate victory for the two-match set.  The loss prevented the hosts from reaching the top flight for the first time since 1922.

At Jamor, Portugal:

FC Porto, with goals from Fredy Guarin and Falcao,  defeated GD Chaves, a club recently relegated from the second division, 2-1 on Sunday to win the Taca de Portugal title, winning Portugal's big domestic cup competition for the second straight year, and 15th time overall.

Joshua Scott's quadruple (35', 48', 54', 69') helped to carry Dagenham & Redbridge to a 6-0 demolition of visiting Morecambe in game one of their League Two promotion playoff semifinal series on Sunday.  The two clubs will face off again on Wednesday at Morecame (why?) in game two, with the winner to face the Aldershot Town-Rotherham United Winner at Wembley Stadium on May 30, with the winner being promoted (alongside Notts County, AFC Bournemouth, and Rochdale) to League One.

Diego Milito scored the only goal of the match at 57 minutes as Inter Milan locked up their fifth consecutive Serie A title on Sunday with a 1-0 road win over relegated AC Siena on the final day of the league season.  With their 18th Scudetto and the recent Coppa Italia victory over AS Roma in tow, the Nerazzurri can make it a treble next Saturday with victory over Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League final at Madrid.

Danny Mwanga's equalizer at 90 minutes enabled the Philadelphia Union to salvage a 1-1 home draw with FC Dallas, whose goal came at 13 minutes from Brek Shea.

The San Jose Earthquakes and New England Revolution battled to a 0-0 stalemate.

At Columbus, Ohio:

Guillermo Barros Schelotto's late penalty kick (90') was the game's lone goal as the Columbus Crew defeated visiting Chivas USA 1-0 to remain unbeaten.

At Washington:


Mehdi Ballouchy scored the only goal of the match in the 67th minute as the Colorado Rapids defeated DC United at RFK Stadium for the first time in 11 years, 1-0.


At Harrison, New Jersey:


Fredy Montero scored the only goal of the match at 85 minutes as Seattle Sounders FC knocked off the New York Red Bulls 1-0 on the road.


At Kansas City, Kansas:

Two second-half goals from Kei Kamara (50', 88') enabled the Kansas City Wizards to erase a two-goal deficit and gain a 2-2 home deadlock with the Chicago Fire, whose goals came from Julio Martinez (13') and Brian McBride (47').

At Palma, Balearic Islands, Spain:

In the Spanish Premiera Division season finale for both teams, Victor Casadesus (24') and Mario Suarez (78') each scored once as RCD Mallorca defeated visiting Espanyol 2-0 on Saturday.  Despite the win, Mallorca lost out on Spain's final available UEFA Champions League berth, as Sevilla defeated Almeria 3-2 on the road.  The Barralets will settle for Europa League play next season.

At Berlin:

Bayern Munich on Saturday added the DFB-Pokal championship to their recently-won Bundesliga title as they delivered a 4-0 frontier-styled fistbeating to Werder Bremen.  Arjen Robben (PK-35), Ivica Olic (51'), Franck Ribery (63'), and Bastian Schweinsteiger (83') each tallied once for the club that will face Inter Milan in Madrid in next Saturday's UEFA Champions League final.

Marseille and Lyon qualified for the group stage of next season's UEFA Champions League, while AJ Auxerre will take part in the Champions League's playoff round for the right to go to the group stage.  Lille, who finished fourth, and PSG, who won the Coupe de France championship, both will play in the Europa League's playoff round.  Marseille, who won the Coupe de la Ligue title, won the Ligue 1 championship, thus, the berth in the Europa League's third qualifying round went to the fifth-place club, in this case, Montpellier.  Le Mans, Boulogne, and Grenoble were relegated to Ligue 2.  They will be replaced by Caen, Brest, and Arles-Avignon.
