RAPIDS WIN FIRST MLS CUP TITLE

At Toronto:

Macoumba Kandji scored the winning goal in overtime in the 108th minute, as his shot deflected off the leg of FC Dallas defender George John into the Hoops' net, as the Colorado Rapids won their first-ever Major League Soccer championship on Sunday 2-1 over their Western Conference rivals in the MLS Cup Final.  The Hoops got on the scoreboard first in the 35th minute as David Ferreira, who was named the Most Valuable Player in MLS this past week, put Dallas in front.  The Rapids tied it up in the 57th minute, thanks to the equalizer from game MVP Conor Casey.

At Buenos Aires, Argentina:

Sergio Ezequiel Araujo (27') and Martin Palermo (74') each scored a goal on Sunday as Boca Jouniors defeated visiting Arsenal de Sarandi 2-1 in action from Argentina's Premiera Division.

MLS Cup Playoffs: Becks Help Galaxy Finish Off Sounders

David Beckham assisted on goals scored by Edson Buddle (19') and Omar Gonzalez (27') as the Los Angeles Galaxy held off the visiting Seattle Sounders 2-1 on Sunday in game two of their Western Conference semifinal series and took the two-game set 3-1 on aggregate as the opening round of the Major League Soccer playoffs drew to a conclusion.  Next Sunday, the Galaxy will play host to FC Dallas in the single-game Western Conference final, with the winner playing the winner of next Saturday's Eastern final (San Jose at Colorado) to play in the MLS Cup final, which will take place on November 21 in Toronto.

The Major League Soccer playoffs continued on Saturday with two games.

At Columbus, Ohio:

After the Columbus Crew took game two of their Eastern Conference semifinal series 2-1 on Saturday, squaring the two-game series at 2-2 on aggregate,  to force what proved to be thirty scoreless overtime minutes, Conor Casey, Macoumba Kandji, Jeff Larentowicz, Claudio Lopez, and Jamie Smith all converted their penalty kicks in the shootout, while Bryan Carroll's kick sailed over the crossbar, as the Colorado Rapids took the shootout 5-4 and advanced to the single-game Eastern Conference final against the San Jose Earthquakes, which will be played next Saturday at Commerce City, Colorado.  The Crew's defeat, coupled with San Jose's earlier elimination of New York, means that there are no actual Eastern Conference clubs left in the Major League Soccer playoffs.

Dax McCarty's goal at 17 minutes proved to be enough as FC Dallas gained a 1-1 road draw in game two of their Western Conference semifinal series to win the two-game set with defending champions Real Salt Lake 3-2 on aggregate.
