UEFA Cup First Round Concludes

The remaining thirty-nine first-round, two-game, total-goals series concluded Thursday as the 2007-08 UEFA Cup tournament continued. Here's a roundup for five Thursday matches:

At Florence, Italy:

Following a 1-1 home draw in game two, with the series deadlocked 2-2 on aggregate, and after 30 minutes of overtime could not settle the issue, Fiorentina won the penalty kick shootout over Dutch club FC Groningen 4-3 to advance to the group stage.

At Zaragoza, Spain:

Despite losing the second game of their series, 2-1 on the road against Real Zaragoza, Aris Thessaloniki still advanced to the group stage as they won their series because of the away goals rule. Francisco Peral scored the goal that enabled the Greek club to advance, even though the total score for the series was deadlocked at 2-2.

At Lisbon, Portugal:

Second-half goals courtesy of Luca Toni and Hamit Altintop lifted Bayern Munich to a 2-0 road win in game two over Belenenses, thus enabling the longtime German Bundesliga power to win the series 3-0 on aggregate.

At Sofia, Bulgaria:

Andre-Pierre Gignac scored the series-winning goal five minutes into second-half stoppage time, enabling Toulouse to gain a 1-1 road draw with CSKA Sofia, and win the series by that score on aggregate because of that late away goal.

At Blackburn, England:

Despite losing game two on the road to Blackburn 2-1, Greek club Larissa, thanks to Cleyton's goal in the second contest, still advanced to the group stage by winning the series against the English Premiership club on aggregate, 3-2.
