Obafemi Martins took advantage of a defensive blunder by scoring the winning goal in the 89th minute as Birmingham City knocked off Arsenal 2-1 on Sunday to win the Carling Cup Final at Wembley Stadium.  It was the Brumbies' first major piece of silverware in 48 years and it gained the club from the Midlands a berth in the third qualifying round of next season's Europa League.

Gold Coast United Advance To Preliminary Final

At Adelaide, Australia:


Shane Smeltz scored a pair of goals (38', PK-79'), including the game winner as Gold Coast United upended hosts Adelaide United 3-2 on Sunday in the Hyundai A-League playoffs, giving them the right to travel to Gosford in New South Wales to take on the Central Coast Mariners in next weekend's Preliminary Final, with the winner advancing to the March 13 Grand Final, to be played in Queensland against the Brisbane Roar.

CAF Champions League: JC Abidjan, Zamalek, Wydad Casablanca, AS Vita Club Advance To First Round Proper

Four more clubs advanced to the first round of the CAF Champions League as their two-game qualifying-round series concluded on Sunday.

Brisbane Roars Back To Land Berth In Grand Final

At Brisbane, Australia:


Thomas Boich (63') and Henrique (90'+1) enabled the Brisbane Roar to erase a two-goal deficit and gain a 2-2 home draw in game two with the Central Coast Mariners on Saturday and win their two-match series 4-2 on aggregate and clinch a berth in next month's Hyundai A-League Grand Final, in which they would be the host club.


Despite the loss, the Mariners are still alive.  They would host next Saturday's Preliminary Final against the winner of Sunday's Adelaide United-Gold Coast United contest.  The winner of the Preliminary Final would travel to Brisbane for the March 12 final against the Roar.

CAF Champions League: ASEC Mimosas Advance To First Round

The qualifying round for the CAF Champions League continued on Saturday.

Edin Dzeko scored twice in the opening dozen minutes (7', 12') as Manchester City, following last week's scoreless stalemate in Greece, overpowered visiting Aris Salonika in game two 3-0, the same score in which the Citizens won the series on aggregate.

At Enschede, Netherlands:

Theo Janssen (45') and Douglas Franco (47') each delivered a tally as FC Twente took game two at home, 2-0, over FK Rubin Kazan, and took out the Russian club, 4-2 on aggregate.

At Stuttgart, Germany:

SL Benfica, thanks to goals from Eduardo Salvio (31') and Oscar Cardozo (78'), defeated VfB Stuttgart 2-0 on the road in game two, and won their two-match series with the struggling German Bundesliga club 4-1 on aggregate.

Hyundai A-League Playoffs: Reds Eliminate Phoenix
