Copa Libertadores: San Lorenzo, Newell's Old Boys Pick Up Thursday Wins

Jose Antonio Delgado Villar (a.k.a. Nono; 45') and Ruben Castro (64') provided the scoring as Real Betis blanked Rubin Kazan 2-0 on the road in game two and won their two-match series 3-1 on aggregate.

At Naples, Italy:

Lorenzo Insigne (17'), Gonzalo Higuain (78'), and Gokhan Inler (90'+3) provided the scoring as Napoli defeated visiting Swansea City 3-1 in game two and won their two-match series by that same score on aggregate.

At Seville, Spain:

Kevin Gameiro scored the series-winning goal in the 59th minute as Sevilla held off visiting NK Maribor 3-2 in game two and won their two-game series 4-3 on aggregate.

At Donetsk, Ukraine:

Daniel Kolar (29') and Milan Petrzela (33') each scored a first-half goal five minutes apart as FC Viktoria Plzen defeated Shakhtar Donetsk 2-1 in game two on the road and took out the Ukrainian club 3-2 on aggregate.

At Sofia, Bulgaria:

Juninho Quixada scored the series-winning goal in the 88th minute as PFC Ludogorets Razgrad salvaged a game-two 3-3 home draw with Lazio, enabling the Bulgarian club, who had been just moments away from elimination due to the away goals rule, to win their two-match series 4-3 on aggregate.

At Wals-Siezenheim, Austria:

Helped by goals from Sadio Mane (66') and Jonathan Soriano (77'), FC Red Bull Salzburg defeated visiting Ajax Amsterdam 3-1 in game two and completed their two-match beatdown of their Dutch guests 6-1 on aggregate.

At Basel, Switzerland:

Marco Streller scored twice (60', 72') as FC Basel took care of visiting Maccabi Tel Aviv 3-0 in both game two, and the series on aggregate.

At Frankfurt am Main, Germany:

Eliaquim Mangala (58', 71') and Nabil Ghilas (86') delivered the goals as FC Porto came from behind to gain a 3-3 game-two road draw with Eintracht Frankfurt, and with the aggregate score at 5-5, won their series on away goals.

At London:

Emmanuel Adebayor scored a pair of goals four minutes apart in the second half (65', 69') as Tottenham Hotspur defeated visiting FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk 3-1 in game two and overturned their series-opening defeat in the process as they won their series 3-2 on aggregate.

At Trabzon, Turkey:

Arturo Vidal (18') and Dani Osvaldo (33') provided the scoring as Juventus posted a second 2-0 victory over Trabzonspor, this time on the road, and eliminated the Turkish club 4-0 on aggregate.

At Lyon, France:

Alexandre Lacazette scored the only goal of both the match and series in the 80th minute as Lyon took care of visiting FC Chornomorets Odessa 1-0 in both game two and the series on aggregate.

At Florence, Italy:

Josip Ilicic scored in the 47th minute as Fiorentina gained a 1-1 game-two home draw with Esbjerg fB and knocked out the Danish club 4-2 on aggregate.

At Genk, Belgium:

Oleksandr Aliyev scored the game-and-series-insuring goal in the 71st minute as FC Anzhi Makhachkala blanked KRC Genk 2-0 on the road in game two and ousted the Belgian club by that same score on aggregate.

At Valencia, Spain:

A 0-0 home draw in game two with Dynamo Kiev was good enough for Sevilla as the Spanish club eliminated the Ukrainian club 2-0 on aggregate.

At Lisbon, Portugal:

Nicolas Gaitan (70'), Rodrigo Lima (PK-78'), and Lazar Markovic (79') each scored a goal during a ten-minute span in the second half as FC Benfica dominated visiting PAOK FC 3-0 in game two and won their two-match series 4-0 on aggregate.

At Alkmaar, Netherlands:

Nick Viergever's goal in the 19th minute carried AZ Alkmaar to a 1-1 game-two home draw with Slovan Liberec and a 2-1 series aggregate victory over the Czech club.

Juan Carlos Ferreyra's equalizer in the 86th minute lifted Botafogo to a 1-1 road draw with Union Espanola.  Cristian Manuel Chavez scored for the hosts in the 74th minute.

Julio Dos Santos scored twice during a five-minute span early in the second half (50', PK-55') as Cerro Porteno held off visiting Lanus 3-1.

Two games were played on Wednesday as the Round-of-16 in the UEFA Champions League reached the midway point.

At Istanbul, Turkey:

Chelsea gained a series-opening 1-1 draw on the road (a better result than what has happened with England's other Champions League knockout stagers) as Fernando Torres (seen here celebrating) scored in the ninth minute.  Aurelien Chedjou equalized for the hosts in the 64th minute.

Karim Benzima (13', 57'), Gareth Bale (21', 69', that's him here), and Cristiano Ronaldo (52', 89') each delivered a pair as Real Madrid virtually locked up a berth in the quarterfinal round following their match-one 6-1 demolition of Schalke 04.

Copa Libertadores: Thursday Wins At Home For The Strongest, Club Nacional of Paraguay

Group-stage play in the Copa Libertadores continued with two Thursday contests.

Group One:

At La Paz, Bolivia:

Diego Wayar scored the only goal of the match in the 71st minute as The Strongest defeated visiting Universitario de Deportes 1-0.

Group Four:

At Asuncion, Paraguay:

Marcos Melgarejo's goal in the ninth minute held up as Club Nacional defeated visiting Zamora FC 1-0.

End Of Misery For Goats?

Major League Soccer on Thursday bought out the husband-and-wife owners of Chivas USA and will assume controlled of Los Angeles' other MLS club until new ownership, provided that it would be committed to keeping the club in the City of Angels,in turn, buy the team.

The new ownership may also change and rebrand the franchise.

Ever since Jorge Vergana and his wife assumed control of the Goats a couple of years ago, Chivas USA seemed to have converted into a farm club for Chivas of Guadalajara, which Mr. and Mrs. Vergana owns.

Since joining MLS in 2005, the Goats have shared the StubHub Center with the Los Angeles Galaxy.

Europa League: Spurs Fall; Swans Settle For Home Draw; Red Bulls Too Much For Ajax

The knockout stage of the Europa League commenced on Thursday with the opening game of each of the sixteen Round-of-32 two-match series.

At Ramenskoye, Russia:

The opening match between Belgium's KRC Genk and Anzhi Makhachkala ended in a 0-0 stalemate.

At Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine:

Yevhen Konoplyanka's successful penalty kick in the 81st minute provided the only goal of FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk's 1-0 series-opening home win over Tottenham Hotspur.

At Turin, Italy:

Dani Osvaldo (16') and Paul Pogba (90'+4) each delivered a goal as Juventus blanked visiting Trabzonspor 2-0 in their series opener.

At Odessa, Ukraine:

The opening match between FC Chornomorets Odessa and visiting Lyon concluded in a 0-0 deadlock.

At Esbjerg, Denmark:

Napoli held homestanding Swansea City to a game-one 0-0 draw.

Luiz Adriano's equalizer in the 65th minute lifted Shakhtar Donetsk to a series-opening 1-1 road draw with FC Viktoria Plzen.  Stanislav Teci scored in the 62nd minute to give the hosts a short-lived lead.

At Rome:

Roman Bezjak scored the only goal of the match in the 45th minute as PFC Ludogorets Razgrad knocked off Lazio 1-0 on the road in the opening match of their two-game series.

At Amsterdam, Netherlands:

At Milan, Italy:

Deigo Costa (that's him celebrating) scored the only goal of the match in the 83rd minute as Atletico Madrid knocked off AC Milan 1-0 on the road in the opening match of their two-game series.

Toni Kroos (54') and Thomas Muller (88') delivered the goals as Bayern Munich took control of their series with Arsenal after blanking the Gunners on the road 2-0 in game one.  Here, we see the Gunners' Mesut Ozil fail on his seventh-minute penalty kick attempt, which was easily cleared Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

This Happened Two Weeks Ago

David Beckham exercised his option and will become one of the owners of a new Major League Soccer expansion club based in Miami, currently with no nickname, to begin play in 2017.

Nicknames being bandied about include Vice and Current.  

Miami's original MLS club, the Miami Fusion, was contracted in January, 2002, after four years.

At Sangolqui, Ecuador:

Sebastian Jaime (53') and Cristian Chavez (58') each delivered a goal as Union Espanola gained a 2-2 road draw with Independiente de Valle.  Junior Sornoza (PK-30') and Fernando Guerrero (57') each tallied once for the hosts.

Lionel Messi (PK-54', that's him celebrating while goalkeeper Joe Hart looks in frustration) and Daniel Alves (90') each scored a goal as Barcelona blanked 10-man Manchester City 2-0 on the road in the opening match of their two-game series.

CAF Champions League: Preliminary Round Concludes

The preliminary round of the CAF Champions League concluded on Sunday with 13 games.

At Atbarah, South Sudan:

Despite dropping a 2-0 game-two decision on the road against Atlabara, visiting Berekum Chelsea from Ghana, with the series deadlocked at 2-2 on aggregate, won the penalty-kick shootout 3-0 to advance to the first qualifying round.

At N'Djamena, Chad:

Despite dropping a 2-0 game-two decision on the road to Foullah Edifice, Al-Ahli Benghazi from Libya won their two-game series 4-2 on aggregate.

At Bitam, Gabon:

Even though US Bitam were able to deadlock their two-game series with Kenya's Gor Mahia at 1-1 on aggregate following their 1-0 home triumph in game two, the Kenyan club won the penalty-kick shootout 3-1 to advance to the first quarterfinal round.

At Notse, Togo:

Despite dropping a 2-1 game-two decision on the road to Anges de Notse, Enyimba International FC from Nigeria still won their two-match series 4-3 on aggregate.

At Ebebiyin, Equatorial Guinea:

Les Astres FC from Cameroon blanked FC Akonangui 1-0 on the road in game two and won their two-match series 4-0 on aggregate.

At Monrovia, Liberia:

Barrack Young Controllers blanked visiting Asante Kotoko (Ghana) in the second match of their two-game series, which they won on away goals.  The aggregate score was 2-2.

At Unguja, Zanzibar:

Despite dropping a 2-0 game-two road decision to KMKM, Dedebit FC from Ethiopia still took their two-match series 3-2 on aggregate.

At Conakry, Guinea:

Horoya AC overcame their series-opening road defeat and dominated visiting FC Nouadhibou 3-0 at home in game two and won their two-match series with the Mauritanian club 3-1 on aggregate.

At Bamako, Mali:

A 1-1 road draw in game two against Stade Malien lifted Sporting Praia Cruz of Sao Tome and Principe to a 4-3 aggregate victory and a berth in the first qualifying round.

At Teyateyaneng, Lesotho:

Despite a 2-1 game-two defeat on the road against Lioli FC, Angola's Premeiro de Agosto won their two-match series 3-2 on aggregate.

At Antananarivo, Madagascar:

A 0-0 game-two stalemate on the road against CNaPS Sport was good enough for Liga Muculmana as the Mozambique club won their two-match series 1-0 on aggregate.

At Gaborone, Botswana:

A 1-1 game-two road draw was good enough for Dynamos FC as the Zimbabwean club finished off Mochudi Centre Chiefs 4-1 on aggregate.

At Niamey, Niger:

Zamalek took game two of their series with AS Douanes Niamey 1-0 on the road and won their two-game series 3-0 on aggregate.
