CAF CL: Home Wins For Esperance ST and JS Kabylie

Group stage action in the CAF Champions League resumed with two games played on Saturday.

Group A:

At Rades, Tunisia:

Oussama Darragi's penalty kick at 83 minutes provided all the scoring as Esperance ST defeated visiting Dynamos FC 1-0.

Group B:

At Tizi Ouzou, Algeria:

Fares Hamiti scored the lone goal of the match (55') as JS Kabylie defeated visiting Heartland FC 1-0. 

MLS: Two Assists For Theirry Henry In MLS Debut; Shutout Wins For Wizards, RSL, Sounders

Seven games were played Saturday in Major League Soccer.

At Chester, Pennsylvania:

Marko Perovic scored the equalizer at 70 minutes as the New England Revolution gained a 1-1 road draw with the Philadelphia Union.  Sebastien Le Toux scored at 24 minutes for the hosts.

At Commerce City, Colorado:

FC Dallas stretched their unbeaten streak to eight games with a 1-1 road deadlock with the Colorado Rapids. Julien Baudet's own goal (22') put the Hoops up 1-0, but Mehdi Ballouchy's successful penalty kick at 26 minutes tied it up for the Rapids.

At Houston:

Juan Pablo Angel scored twice (8', 58'), assisted on both goals by Thierry Henry, playing in his first MLS match, as the New York Red Bulls battled the homestanding Houston Dynamo to a 2-2 stalemate.  Brad Davis (PK-21') and Brian Mullen (89') each scored once for the Dynamo.

At Kansas City, Kansas:

Teal Burnbury scored the only goal of the match (61') as the Kansas City Wizards downed visiting Toronto FC 1-0.

At Sandy, Utah:

Alvaro Saborio (13'), Robbie Findley (79'), and Nelson Gonzalez (90') each scored once as Real Salt Lake dominated visiting DC United 3-0.

At Santa Clara, California:

Fredy Montero scored the only goal of the match at 26 minutes as Seattle Sounders FC, playing their first game since the Friday trade that sent Freddie Ljungberg to Chicago for a draft pick, continued their resurgence with a 1-0 road win over the San Jose Earthquakes.

At Carson, California:

Justin Braun (37'), Blair Gavin (45'), and Carlos Borja (53') each tallied once as Chivas USA topped the visiting Columbus Crew 3-1.

At Brussels, Belgium:

Matias Suarez scored twice (58', 73') as part of a four-goal barrage in the second half as RSC Anderlecht obliterated a 1-0 halftime deficit and smothered visiting Eupen 4-1 on Saturday in the opening contest of the Belgian Juliper League season for both clubs.

CONCACAF CL: 1-1 Draw In San Salvador

At San Salvador, El Salvador:

Williams Reyes' equalizer at 44 minutes salvaged a game-one 1-1 draw for CD FAS with visiting Club Xelaju MC as the opening week of preliminary-round action for berths in the group stage of the CONCACAF Champions League concluded on Thursday.  Nelson Crossa scored at 42 minutes for the visiting club from Guatemala.

Europa League QR3: LIverpool and Juve Cruise To 2-0 Series-Opening Wins

The 34 remaing two-game series in the third qualifying round for the Europa League got under way on Thursday.

At Novosibirsk, Russia:

Aleksei Medvedev scored the only goal of the match at 74 minutes as FC Sibir Novosibirsk took game one of their two-match series with Apollon Limassol of Cyprus 1-0 at home.

At Novi Sad, Vojvodina, Serbia:

Vladimir Torbica converted not one, but TWO, count 'em, two penalty kicks (16', 90') as FK Spartak Zlatibor Voda took the opening contest of their two-game series with FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk.  But the visiting Volodymyr Homenyuk kept the visiting Ukrainian club alive in the two-game set with his goal at 23 minutes.

At Mogilev, Belarus:

Igor Zenkovich scored the only goal of the match at 63 minutes as FC Dnepr Mogilev won their series opener, 1-0 at home, over FC Banik Ostrava.

At Anjalankoski, Finland:

FC Timisoara took the opening match of their series with MYPA 2-1 on the road.  The visiting Romanian club got goals from Iulian Tames (34') and Mircea Axente (74').

At Turku, Finland:

Jelle Vossen, who entered as a substitute at 69 minutes, scored two late goals (77', 85') as KRC Genk spanked Inter Tuku 5-1 on the road in game one to all but punch their tickets for the Europa League's playoff round.

At Chorzow, Poland:

Roland Linz (7'), Peter Hlinka (43'), and Tomas Jun (73') each scored a goal as Austria Vienna grabbed their series opener 3-1 on the road over Ruch Chorzow.

At Lviv, Ukraine:

Igor Khudobyak's goal at 6 minutes held up as FC Karpaty Lviv took game one 1-0 over visiting FC Zestafoni.

At Molde, Norway:

Powered by goals from Sebastian Rudy (27'), Zdravko Kuzmanovic (74'), and Martin Harnik (82'), VfB Stuttgart won game one of their two-match series 3-2 on the road over Molde FK.

At Boras, Sweden:

With five different goal scorers each tallying once----Stefan Ishizaki (29'), Anders Svensson (50'), Denni Avdic (57'), Daniel Nordmark (66'), and James Keene (77')----IF Elfsborg demolished visiting FK Teteks 5-0 in game one.

At Utrecht, Netherlands:

Dries Mertens provided all the game-one scoring with his tally at 35 minutes as FC Utrecht defeated visiting FC Luzern 1-0 in the series opener.

At Randers, Denmark:

Silvio scored twice (PK-62', 84') as FC Lausanne-Sport knocked off Randers FC 3-2 on the road in match one of their two-game series.

At Aalesund, Denmark:

Alexander Mathiesen saved the day with his late penalty kick (90'+3) enabling Aalesunds FK to salvage a game-one 1-1 home draw with Motherwell FC.  The visiting Steelmen from Scotland did get an away goal at 48 minutes from Jamie Murphy.

At Nicosia, Cyprus:

Esteban Solari delivered the only goal of the match at 55 minutes as APOEL FC defeated visiting FK Jablonec 1-0 in game one of their two-match set.

At Odense, Denmark:

Peter Utaka scored twice (31', 60') as Odense BK won game one 5-3 over visiting HSK Zrinjski Mostar.  Vlado Zadro scored a pair of away goals (15', 71') to keep the Bosnian club's hopes of winning the two-game series alive.

At Kalmar, Sweden:

Abiola Dauda's late equalizer (83') enabled Kalmar FF to salvage a 1-1 home draw in their opening match with Levski Sofia.  The Bulgarian club's away goal came at 28 minutes from Joaozinho.

At Sofia, Bulgaria:

Vladislav Zlatinov scored the equalizer at 85 minutes as PFC Beroe Stara Zagora gained a 1-1 home draw with Rapid Vienna in match one of their two-game series.  Rapid did gain advantage for the series due to their away goal scored by Steffen Hofmann (45'+1).

At Haifa, Israel:

Vladimer Dvalishvili scored the lone goal of the match (35') as Maccabi Haifa defeated Dinamo Minsk in match one of their two-game series 1-0 at home.

At Krakow, Poland:

Vugar Nadyrov's goal at 69 minutes provided all the scoring as FK Qarabag took their series opener 1-0 on the road over Wisla Krakow.

At Bruges, Belgium:

Dominic Foley scored the game's lone goal (69') as Cercle Brugge topped visiting Anorthosis Famagusta FC in game one of their two-game series 1-0.

At Bucharest, Romania:

With Andrei Cristea (PK-6'), Juan Pablo Garat (40'), and Djakaridja Kone (70') each tallying once, Dinamo Bucharest took the series opener with Hajduk Split 3-1 at home.

At Istanbul, Turkey:

Arda Turan scored twice (26', 76'), staking Galatasaray to a 2-0 lead, only to see OFK Belgrade storm back with late goals from Milos Krstic (80') and Nenad Injac (86') and gain a 2-2 draw and take advantage in the series thanks to those away goals.

At Farum, Denmark:

Simon Vukcevic scored the only goal of the match at 24 minutes as Sporting CP took game one on the road 1-0 over FC Nordsjaelland

At Maribor, Slovenia:

Josip Ilicic scored twice (31', 52') as NK Maribor dominated visiting Hibernian 3-0 in match one.

At Belgrade, Serbia:

Slovan Bratislava, with goals from Milan Ivana (43') and Kornel Salata (68') defeated Red Star Belgrade 2-1 on the road in game one.

At Prague, Czech Republic:

Matias Delgado's successful penalty kick (44') enabled Besiktas to gain a 1-1 game-one road draw with FC Viktoria Plzen.  David Limbersky scored at 28 minutes for the hosts.

At Piraeus, Greece:

Jaouad Zairi (67') and Dennis Rommedahl (73') provided the goalpower as Olympiacos came from behind to edge visiting Maccabi Tel Aviv 2-1 in game one of their two-match series.  But the Israeli club still has a chance, thanks to Haris Medunjanin's penalty kick at 18 minutes.

At Graz, Austria:

After a scoreless first half, SK Sturm Graz took control in the second half, thanks to goals from Ferdinand Feldhofer (48') and Roman Kienast (59'), to win their opening contest 2-0 over Dinamo Tbilisi.

At Gyor, Hungary:

Montpellier took match one on the road over Gyori ETO FC.  Olivier Giroud scored in the 32nd minute for the French club.

At Funchal, Portugal:

Tcho (33', 79'), Danilo (38', 75'), and Baba Diawara (51', 78') each doubled as CS Maritimo annihilated visiting Bangor City FC 8-2 in game one.

At Dublin, Ireland:

When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie, that's Amaui as he scored both goals (3',75') as Juventus defeated Shamrock Rovers 2-0 on the road in match one.

At Alkmaar, Netherlands:

Ragnar Klavan (52') and Johann Gudmundsson (56') provided the goalpower as AZ Alkmaar blanked visiting IFK Gothenburg 2-0 in game one of their two-game series.

At Bialystok, Poland:

Toni Calvo scored twice early in the first half (PK-4', 7') as Aris Thessaloniki FC defeated Jagiellonia Bailystok 2-1 on the road in match one.

At Skopje, Macedonia:

David Ngog provided both goals (17', 58') as Liverpool blanked FK Rabotnicki 2-0 on the road in the opening contest of their two-game series.

At Podgorica, Montenegro:

Mike Jensen scored the game winner at 87 minutes as Brondby IF won game one 2-1 on the road over Buducnost Podgorica.

Copa Libertadores: Giuliano Gives Internacional Semifinal Series Opener

At Porto Alegre, Brazil:

Giuliano scored the only goal of the match (67') as Internacional defeated Sao Paulo 1-0 at home Wednesday night in game one of their two-game series in the semifinal round of the Copa Libertadores.

CONCACAF CL: Marathon and Sounders Take Series Openers; Joe Public and Brujas Draw In Costa Rica

Three more games were played on Wednesday night as the opening week of the qualifying round for the CONCACAF Champions League continued.

At Panama City, Panama:

Claudio Labarinas scored twice (24', 59') CD Marathon from Honduras defeated Tauro FC 3-2 on the road in game one.

At Heredia, Costa Rica:

Kerry Baptiste (13') and Trent Noel (90'+1) each scored once as Joe Public FC gained a 2-2 road draw in game one with Brujas FC.  The Costa Rican club got their goals from Andres Nunez (2') and Jose Cordero (66').

At Seattle:


Fredy Montero scored the only goal of the match at 60 minutes as the Seattle Sounders defeated visiting Salvadorian club AD Isidro Metapan 1-0 in game one.

Red Devils Dominate All-Star Game

At Houston:

Federico Macheda scored twice (1', 12') and Darron Gibson (69'), Tom Cleverley (72'), and Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez (83') scored a goal apiece as Manchester United dominated the Major League Soccer All-Stars 5-2 in the MLS All-Star Game on Wednesday night before 70.728 fans at Reliant Stadium.  Brian Ching from the Houston Dynamo (63') and his former San Jose and Houston Teammate Dwayne De Rosario, now with Toronto FC (89') provided the MLS All-Stars' goals.

UCL QR3: Bhoys Smothered In Portugal; Rosenborg, Basel Take Series Openers On Road; Convincing Win For Partizan

Nine games were played on Wednesday to start the remaining two-game series in the third qualifying round for the upcoming UEFA Champions League.

Champions Path:

At Aktobe, Kazakhstan:

Samat Smakov, with his successful penalty kick,  scored the only goal of the match at 67 minutes as FK Aktobe took game one of their two-match set at home, 1-0 over Hapoel Tel Aviv.

At Borisov, Belarus:


The opening contest between FC Copenhagen and hosts FC BATE Borisov ended in a 0-0 stalemate.

At Tiraspol, Moldova:

Alexandr Erokhin's score at 35 minutes salvaged a 1-1 home draw in game one for FC Sheriff with Dinamo Zagreb.  The Croatian club got what might well still be an important goal on the road at 3 minutes from Jorge Sammir.


At Budapest, Hungary:

Valentin Stocker scored the only goal of the match (34') as FC Basel took the opening contest on the road with Debreceni VSC 1-0. 


At Solna, Sweden:

Markus Henriksen delivered the only goal of the match at 33 minutes as Rosenborg took game one of their two-match series with AIK  1-0 on the road.


At Belgrade, Serbia:

Partizan Belgrade are halfway to the playoff round after their 3-0 home beatdown of HJK Helsinki in game one.  Ivica Iliev (8'), Sasa Ilic (42'), and Cleo (90'+2) each scored once for the Serbian champions.

At Amsterdam, Netherlands:

Vladimir Ivic scored the game-tying goal at 73 minutes, lifting PAOK FC to a 1-1 road draw in game one with Ajax Amsterdam. Luis Suarez scored at 13 minutes for the hosts.


At Bern, Switzerland:

Moreno Costanza's penalty kick at 89 minutes, along with Emiliano Dudar's earlier tally (18') salvaged a 2-2 opening match home draw for BSC Young Boys with Fenerbahce.  The Turkish club, because of away goals, gain the advantage in this two-match set.  Emre Belozoglu ( 5') and Miroslav Stoch (42') scored in the first half for the Yellow Canaries.


At Braga, Portugal:

SC Braga dominated their opening match with Celtic, hammering the visiting runners-up from Scotland 3-0.  Alan (PK-26'), Elderson (76'), and Matheus (88') each tallied once for the hosts.

Univeridad de Chile and Goats Battle to 1-1 Semi Series-Opening Draw

At Mexico City:

The opening contest of the Copa Libertadores semifinal series between Chivas de Guadalajara and Universidad de Chile on Tuesday ended in a 1-1 draw.  Rafael Olarra put the visitors up 1-0 with his goal in the 47th minutes, but, at 51 minutes, Omar Arellano Riveron equalized for the Goats. 

CONCACAF CL: Galaxy Blown Out At Home In Series Opener

The qualifying round for the 2010-11 CONCACAF Champions League commenced with the opening contests in four two-game total-goals series on Tuesday.

At Port-of-Spain, Trinidad:

Rodrigo Ruiz scored the only goal of the match at 82 minutes as Mexico's Santos Laguna took game one against San Juan Jobloteh 1-0 on the road.

At Toronto:

Chad Barrett's goal at 20 minutes proved to be all the scoring in game one as Toronto FC defeated CD Motagua of Honduras 1-0.

At Carson, California:

Nicholas Addlery scored twice ( 45', 80') as the Puerto Rico Islanders embarrassed the Los Angeles Galaxy on the road in their series opener 4-1.

At La Chorrera, Panama:

Emanuel Villa's hat trick (3', 54', 71') guided Cruz Azul, runners up in last year's tournament, to a 3-2 road win over San Francisco FC in the opening match.

CSKA Sofia dominated visiting Cliftonville FC in match one of their two-game series as the third round of qualifying for the Europa League commenced on Tuesday.  The Army Men were represented on the scoreboard by Pavel Vidanov (9'), Marquinhos (72'), and Rumen Trifonov (74').

Lomana LuaLua's penalty kick in second-half stoppage time (90'+1) enabled AC Omonia to salvage a 1-1 home deadlock in game one with Red Bull Salzburg.  Gonzalo Zarate scored at 6 minutes for the visiting Austrian club. 

At Lovech, Bulgaria:

MSK Zilina gained a 1-1 road draw in their series opener with PFC Litex Lovech.  Tomas Majtan scored at 65 minutes for the visiting Slovakian club, but Tom (a.k.a. Wellington Brito da Silva) equalized for Lovech at 79 minutes.

At Prague, Czech Republic:

Erich Brabec provided the only goal of the match (75') as Sparta Prague blanked visiting Lech Poznan 1-0 in game one of their two-game series.

Tigres Drop Season Opener

At San Nicolas, Mexico:

Sergio Blanco scored the only goal of the match at 45 minutes as visiting Queretero defeated Tigres 1-0 Saturday in the opening match of the Torneo Apertura phase of the 2010-11 Mexican Primera Division season for both clubs. 

MLS: Columbus Blanks Houston; 1-1 Draws At Toronto and Suburban Salt Lake City

Three games populated Saturday's Major League Soccer schedule.

At Toronto:

Milton Rodriguez scored the equalizer at 78 minutes, enabling FC Dallas to gain a 1-1 road draw with Toronto FC, who, thanks to Maicon Santos' tally (61') remained unbeaten at home for the season.

At Columbus, Ohio:

Emilio Renteria (34'), Andy Iro (83'), and Leandre Griffit (90') each scored once as the Columbus Crew, thanks to Will Hesmer's second staight shutout and eighth overall this season, blanked the visiting Houston Dynamo 3-0.


At Sandy, Utah:


Real Salt Lake stretched their franchise-record home unbeaten streak to nineteen regular-season games with a 1-1 draw with Chivas USA.  Ned Grabavoy scored for RSL at 67 minutes, then Jesus Padilla equalized for the Goats two minutes later.

NOW, It's Official

At Andorra la Vella, Andorra:

Thursday's originally scheduled match between MYPA and hosts UE Sant Maria, the second game in the two-match set in the second qualifying round for the Europa League was abandoned in the 80th minute because of adverse weather conditions with the visiting club from Finland leading 1-0.

The game was replayed on Friday in its entirety.  Maxim Votinov's hat trick (6', 13', 64') helped carried MYPA to a 5-0 horse whipping of their Andorran hosts, enabling them to win their two-game set 8-0 on aggregate.

Myllykosken Pallo-47, which is MYPA's full name, will take on FC Timisoara from Romania in the third qualifying round with the first match scheduled for next Thursday in Romania.

Yes Folks, He DID Score

At Harrison, New Jersey:

Thierry Henry scored his first goal for the New York Red Bulls (25') on Thursday night, but Robbie Keane (62') and Gareth Bale (72') provided the second-half scoring as Tottenham Hotspur came back to win 2-1 in an international exhibition match.

MLS: Late Landon Donovan Goal Salvages Home Draw Fopr Galaxy

At Carson, California:

Landon Donovan's 90th-minute equalizer, along with Edson Buddle's earlier tally (58') enabled the Los Angeles Galaxy to erase two one-goal deficits and salvage a 2-2 home stalemate with the San Jose Earthquakes in the lone Thursday Major League Soccer match.  Bobby Convey (1') and Brandon McDonald (71') each tallied once for the Quakes.

Europa League: Second Qualifying Round Concludes

The second qualifying round for the 2010-11 Europa League concluded on Thursday as the 40 two-game series came to a close.

At Yrevan, Armenia:

A 0-0 draw on the road against Mika FC was good enough as FK Rabotnicki won their two-game series 1-0 on aggregate.

At Skopje, Macedonia:

Thanks to goals from Evgeni Postnikov (OG-15'), Dimce Ristevski (34'), and Ivica Gligorovski (54'), FK Teteks defeated visiting FK Ventspils 3-1 in game two and took the two-match series by that same score on aggregate.

At Borisov, Belarus:

Ivan Kecojevic scored the only goal of the match at 67 minutes as OFK Belgrade won game two on the road, 1-0 at the expense of FC Torpedo Zhodino and the two-game series 3-2 on aggregate.



At Banska Bystrica, Slovakia:

Despite dropping a 1-0 decision in game two on the road, FC Zestafoni still won their two-game series with FK Dukla Banska Bystrica 3-1 on aggregate.

At Niksic, Montenegro:

Despite dropping a 2-1 game-two decision on the road, Maccabi Tel Aviv still won their two-game series with FK Mogren 3-2 on aggregate.  Haris Medunjanin scored the series winner at 7 minutes for the Israeli club.

At Novi Sad, Serbia:

Vojo Ubiparip (25') and Marko Adamovic (88') provided the scoring as FK Spartak Zlatibor Voda took game two 2-0 over visiting FC Differdange 03 and won the two-game series 5-3 on aggregate.

At Baku, Azerbaijan:

Afran Ismayilov scored the series-winning goal at 83 minutes as FK Qarabag won game two at home over Portadown FC 1-0 and won their two-match series with the club from Northern Ireland 3-2 on aggregate.

At Tbilisi ,Georgia:

Dinamo Tbilisi secured a second 4-2 win over Gefle FF in game two, this time at home, as the Georgian club took the two-game set 4-2 on aggregate. Mate Vatsadze (68') and Nikoloz Pirtskhalava (82') provided the scoring for the hosts.

At Turku, Finland:

Thanks to goals from Reynaldo (51') and Lukas Van Eenoo (86'), Cercle Brugge won game two 2-1 on the road over TPS, and with the score at 2-2 on aggregate, won the two-match set with their Finnish opponents on away goals.

At Dugopolje, Croatia:

Baye Djiby Fall scored the series-winning goal at 14 minutes as Molde FK, despite dropping game two 2-1 on the road to FK Jelgava, still, with the score at 2-2 on aggregate, won their two-match set with their Latvian opponents due to the away goals rule.

At Ostrava, Czech Republic:

FC Banik Ostrava, despite being held to a 0-0 home draw in game two, still, thanks to their big win in Georgia last week, still easily won their two-game series with WIT Georgia 6-0 on aggregate.

At Tallinn, Estonia:

Continuing their pattern from last week's beatdown win, Dinamo Minsk demolished JK Sillamae Kalev 5-0 on the road in game two to finish their two-game nuking of their Estonian opponents 10-1 on aggregate.  Andrei Chukhlei scored twice (19', 65') for Dinamo.

At Lviv, Ukraine:

Sergei Zenjov (2'), Artem Fedetskiy (25'), and Borys B. Baranets (69') each tallied once as FC Karpaty Lviv topped visiting KR Reykjavik 3-2 in game two and won their two-game series 6-2 on aggregate.

At Chisinau, Moldova:

Erik Israelsson (12') and Daniel Sobralense (88') provided the scoring that propelled Kalmar FF to a 2-0 road win  in game two over FC Dacia Chisinau and a 2-0 aggregate win for the two-game series.

At Andorra la Vella, Andorra:

Maxim Votinov scored the lone goal of the match at 30 minutes as MYPA defeated UE Sant Julia 1-0 on the road in game two and took the two-match series 4-0 on aggregate.

At Randers, Denmark:

Mikkel Cramer's goal at 42 minutes provided all the game-two scoring as Randers FC defeated visiting ND Gorica 1-0 and won the series with their Slovenian opponents 4-1 on aggregate.

At Tiraspol, Moldova:

Stefan Ishizaki scored the only goal of the match at 60 minutes as IF Elfsborg won game two on the road, 1-0 over FC Iskra-Stal and took the two-game series 3-1 on the road.

At Nicosia, Cyprus:

Esteban Solari scored twice (18', PK-86') as APOEL FC defeated visiting Tauras 3-1 in game two and took the two-match series 6-1 on aggregate.

At Tirana, Albania:

A 1-1 draw on the road with KF Tirana in game two was more than good enough for FC Utrecht as the Dutch club easily won their two-game series 5-1 on aggregate.  Ricky van Wolfswinkel scored in the 3rd minute for the guests.

At Tel Aviv, Israel:

Thomas Stewart scored the only goal of the match at 70 minutes as Shamrock Rovers defeated Bnei Yehuda 1-0 in game two on the road and won their two-game series 2-1 on aggregate. 

At Bucharest, Romania:

Dimamo Bucharest had no trouble in game two of their two-match set with Olimpia Balti, winning the game 5-1 and winning their two-game set 7-1.  Andrei Cristea (3'), Adrian Cristea (32'), Ousmane N'Doye (45'), Catalin Munteanu (59'), and Gabriel Torje (PK-63') each scored a goal for the hosts.

At Krakow, Poland:

At Dundalk, Ireland:

Garra Dembele scored both goals (4', 33') as Levski Sofia blanked Dundalk 2-0 on the road in game two to finish their two-game domination of the Irish club 8-0 on aggregate.

At Toftir, Faroe Islands:

Bobo proved to be no clown as his double (32', 44') helped Besiktas deliver a 4-0 horse whipping to hosts Vikingur in game two and handily win their two-match series 7-0 on aggregate.

At Chorzow, Poland:

A 0-0 home deadlock was good enough for Ruch Chorzow, who, with the two-match aggregate score at 1-1, won their series with Valletta thanks to the away goals rule.

At Vienna, Austria:

Doubles from Nikica Jelavic (20', 90') and Rene Gartier (86', 89') provided the scoring as Rapid Vienna doubled visiting FK Suduva 4-2 in game two and won the two-game series 6-2 on aggregate.

At Maribor, Slovenia:

Dalibor Volas provided both goals (39', 80') as NK Maribor defeated visiting Videoton FC 2-0 and won their two-match set 3-1 on aggregate.

At Gyor, Hungary:

NOTE:  On Thursday, UEFA awarded a 3-0 game-one win to Gyori ETO FC because FC Atyrau from Kazakhstan fielded an ineligible player in last week's series opener.

With goals scored by Rati Aleksidze (47') and Mihai Nicorec (52') and the awarding earlier Thursday of the 3-0 forfeit win in game one, Gyori ETO FC took game two 2-0 and defeated FK Aryrau 5-0 on aggregate for the two-match series.

At Serravalle, San Marino:

Vernes Selimovic (3', 27') and Mladen Zizovic (10', PK-55') each scored twice HSK Zrinjski Mostar annihilated SP Tre Penne 9-2 on the road in game two and completed their two-match demolition of the club from San Marino 13-3 on aggregate.


At Piraeus, Greece:

At Podgorica, Montenegro:

NOTE:  On Thursday, UEFA awarded a 3-0 win to Buducnost Podgorica for game one of their two-match series with FK Baku because the Azerbaijani club fielded an ineligible player in last week's series opener.

SuperLiga: Dynamo Top Puebla To Win Group A; Both Clubs Advance To Semis

Group stage play in the North American SuperLiga concluded on Wednesday with two games played in Group A.

At Houston:

Dominic Oduro scored the only goal of the match as the Houston Dynamo defeated visiting Puebla 1-0 to finish atop Group A.  Both teams advanced to the semifinal round.

At Carson, California:

Giancarlo Maldonado's goal at 7 minutes held up as Chivas USA defeated visiting Pachuca 1-0.

US Open Cup: DC United Makes It An All-MLS Semifinal Field

At Boyds, Maryland:

Thanks to goals courtesy of Branko Boskovic (1') and Thabiso Khumalo (47'), DC United defeated the Harrisburg City Islanders (USL-2; they were last non-MLS club remaining in the tournament) 2-0 to reach the semifinal round of the US Open Cup tournament on Wednesday night.

Both semifinal contests will take place on September 1, with DC United hosting the Columbus Crew at RFK Stadium, while Chivas USA will battle the Seattle Sounders at Tukwila, Washington.  The winners will play in the final which will take place on October 5.

UCLQR2: Aktobe, Partizan, AIK Advance To Third Qualifying Round

The second qualifying round for the 2010-11 UEFA Champions League concluded on Wednesday as eleven more clubs punched their tickets for the third qualifying round.

At Rustavi, Georgia:

Murat Tieshev helped ice the two-game series at 90 minutes as FK Aktobe gained a 1-1 road draw in game two with Olimpi Rustavi and a 3-1 aggregate win in the two-match series.

At Yerevan, Armenia:

Cleverson Gabriel Cordova, better known as Cleo, scored the only goal of the match (45'+4) as Partizan Belgrade defeated Pyunik FC 1-0 on the road in game two and took the two-match set 4-1 on aggregate.


At Esch-sur-Alzette, Luxembourg:


A 0-0 stalemate on the road in game two was good enough for AIK as the Swedish club won their two-match series with Jeunesse Esch 1-0 on aggregate.

At Helsinki, Finland:

Juhani Ojala's goal at 77 minutes enabled HJK Helsinki to take game two of their two-set match at home with FK Ekranas 1-0, forcing the series to go into overtime, where, sadly for the visiting Lithuanian club, right near the end of the second overtime period, Andrius Sidlauskas' own goal (129') sent the Finnish club into the third qualifying round as HJK took the two-game set 2-1 on aggregate.


At Zilina, Slovakia:

MSK Zilina overturned their 1-0 road defeat of last week with an overpowering performance at home, dominating visiting Birkirkira FC 3-0 in game two, enabling them to take the series 3-1 on aggregate.  Josef Piasek (21'), Ivan Lietava (77'), and Tomas Oravec (90'+2) provided the scoring that sent the Slovakian club into the third qualifying round.


At Prague, Czech Republic:


Marek Matejovsky (12') and Martin Zeman (43') each scored once as Sparta Prague took game two 2-0 at home and finished off Liepajas Metalurgs 5-0 on aggregate for the two-game set.


At Debrecen, Hungary:


Adamo Coulibaly (24'), Yannick Mbengono (32'), and Peter Szakaly (55') each delivered a goal as Debreceni VSC won game two 3-2 over Levadia Tallinn and eliminated the Estonian club 4-3 on aggregate after a very competitive two-game series.

At Poznan, Poland:

After Girts Kalsons scored in the 84th minute, enabling Inter Baku to take match two on the road against Lech Poznan 1-0 and forcing the two-game series into overtime (which was scoreless after 30 minutes), the issue was settled with a lengthy penalty-kick shootout.  Bartosz Bosacki, Jacek Kielb, Seweryn Gancarczyk, Jakub Wilk, Dimitrije Injac, Grzegorz Wojtkowiak, Manuel Arboleda, Semir Stilic, and Krzysztof Kotorowski all converted their spot kicks and the host Railwaymen topped the visiting Azerbaijani club 9-8 in the shootout to advance to the third qualifying round.


At Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina:


Douglas da Silva scored the only goal of the match (76') as Hopoel Tel Aviv concluded their smothering of FK Zeljeznicar Sarajevo with a 1-0 road win in game two and a 6-0 aggregate victory.


At Trondheim, Norway:


After a scoreless draw last week in Northern Ireland, Rosenborg, thanks to goals from Rade Prica (32') and Markus Henriksen (87'), took game two at home from Linfield FC and took the two-game set on aggregate by the same 2-0 score.


At Hafnarfjordur, Iceland:


Vitali Rodionov scored the lone goal of the match at 15 minutes as FC BATE Borisov took care of matters on the road as they defeated FH Hafnarfjordur 1-0 in game two and took the two-match set 6-1 on aggregate.
