At Banfield, Argentina:
Sebastian Fernandez (49') and Alfonso Espino (81') each scored once to enable Club Nacional of Uruguay to gain a series-opening 2-2 road deadlock with Banfield.
Nicolas Bertolo (57') and Dario Cvitanich (90'+2) each scored once for the hosts.
The winner of this series will be joined in Group Six by Santos (Brazil), Estudiantes (Argentina), and Real Garlicaso (Peru).
At Rio de Janeiro:
Paulo Marcos de Jesus Ribeiro (a.k.a. Paulao; 17'), Paulinho (40'), Yago Pikacku (87'), and Rildo de Andrade Felicissimo (90'+3) each scored once as Vasco da Gama demolished visiting Jorge Wilstermann 4-0 in game one of their two-match series.
The winner of this series will be joined in Group Five by Cruzeio (Brazil), Universidad de Chile (Chile), and Racing Club de Avellaneda (Argentina).
