More Sunday Action From Africa

Four games were played Sunday as the opening weekend of the second round of the CAF Champions League came to a close.

At Luanda, Angola:

Bena's early double (7', 10') and Mano's 60th-minute tally powered Primeiro de Agosto to a 3-1 home win over Sudan's Al-Halil in game one of their two-match series.

At Owerri, Nigeria:

Thanks to goals from Stanley Okoro (21') and Nwana (60'), Heartland FC edged visiting Cotonsport 2-1 in game one. The visiting Camerounian club did get what might end up being a critical away goal from Ahmadou Ngomna (56').

At Lubumbashi, DRC:

Dioko Kaluyituka's successful penalty kick (20') provided the only goal of game one as TP Mazembe defeated visiting Ittihad Khemisset 1-0.

At Abdijan, Ivory Coast:

Pacome Kouassi's successful penalty kick at 49 minutes provided all the scoring in game one as ASEC Mimosas blanked visiting Monomotapa United FC 1-0.

Road Draw Clinches African Club Title For Al Ahly


At Garoua, Cameroon:

Goals from Ahmed Hassan (38') and Shady Mohamed (89') enabled Al Ahly to gain a 2-2 road draw with Cotonsport Garoua in game two of the final of the 2008 CAF Champions League, thus enabling the Egyptian club to win the championship 4-2 on aggregate.

Al Ahly claimed their sixth African club championship with their latest CAF Champions League triumph and will play in next month's FIFA Club World Cup in Japan.

Al Ahly Take Control Of CAFCL Final With Game One Win

The final round of the 2008 CAF Champions League commenced Sunday.

At Cairo, Egypt:

Waal Gomaa (4') and Flavio Amado (15') provided the early scoring punch that lifted Al Ahly to a game one 2-0 home win over Cameroon's Cotonsport Garoua. The second and final match of this series is scheduled to take place on November 16 in Garoua, Cameroon.

It's Al Ahly vs. Cotonsport Garoua For CAF Champions League Crown

The semifinal round of the CAF Champions League concluded on Saturday.

At Cairo, Egypt:

Flavio Amado scored the only goal of the match (and the two-game series) at 26 minutes at Al Ahly defeated Nigeria's Enyimba 1-0 in game two at home, thus capturing their two-match set 1-0 on aggregate. Al Ahly will play for what would be a record-breaking sixth African club championship in the two-match home-and-away final against Cameroon's Cotonsport Garoua. They share the record with hated local rivals Zamalek.

At Garaou, Cameroon:

Cotonsport Garoua delivered a 4-0 home beatdown on Zimbabwe's Dyanmos to capture their two-match set 5-0 on aggregate. Sabastien Koua (1'), Jacques Zoua (52'), Daouda Kamilou (65'), and Baba Ousmalia (76') each scored once for the hosts. Cotonsport became the first Cameroonian club to reach the finals of Africa's premier club competition in 28 years.

CAF Champions League Semifinal Round: Visitors From Cameroon Take Opener; Scoreless In Nigeria

The semifinal round in the CAF Champions League commence on Sunday:

At Harare, Zimbabwe:

Daouda Kamilou scored the only goal of game one at 32 minutes to lift Cotonsport Garoua of Cameroon to a 1-0 road win over Dynamos in the opening match of the two clubs' home-and-away two-match series.

At Aba, Nigeria:

The opening match of the other semifinal series between visiting Al Ahly of Egypt and homestanding Enyimba ended in a 0-0 stalemate.

Dynamos Clinch CAF Champions League Semifinal Berth

Group stage play in the CAF Champions League concluded Sunday:

Group A:

At Harare, Zimbabwe:

David Shoko scored the only goal of the match at 88 minutes as Dynamos blanked visiting Egyptian club Zamalek 1-0 to claim the second semifinal round berth from Group A. The Zimbabwean club will take on Cameroon's Cotonsport Garoua in the semifinals in a two-match home-and -away series.

At Cairo, Egypt:

Al Ahly, having already clinched first place in Group A, hosted ASEC Mimosas from Ivory Coast in their group stage finale, a contest that ended up as a 2-2 deadlock. Mohamed Aboutreika (4') and Mahmoud El Sayed Samir (76') scored for the hosts, while the visitors got goals courtesy of Ladji Kone (5') and Cyriac Gohi Bi (78'). With the victory by Dynamos, ASEC were eliminated from contention for a semifinal berth. Al Ahly will play Nigerian club Enyimba International FC in the semifinals.

Cotonsport Garoua Spank Enyimba To Win Group B And Eliminate TP Mazembe

Group B play in the 2008 CAF Champions League concluded Saturday:

At Garoua, Cameroon:

Ngomna Ahmadou (39'), Daouda Kamilou (62'), and Baba Ousmaila (75') provided the scoring punch that lifted Cotonsport Garoua to a 3-0 home thumping of semifinal-round-bound Enyimba of Nigeria to win Group B and thus setting up a semifinal two-match set against the runners up from Group A. With that defeat, the Nigerian club will face Group A winners Al Ahly of Egypt in the semifinals. The Cotonsport victory eliminated DRC's TP Mazembe from the tournament.

FINAL GROUP B STANDINGS:

1, Cotonsport Garoua* (GP: 6; GD: +1; PTS: 10)
2. Enyimba* (GP: 6; GD: 0; PTS: 9)
3. TP Mazembe (GP: 6; GD: +2; PTS: 8)

CAF Champions League Group Stage Matchday #6: Road Draw Keeps TP Mazembe Alive, Eliminates Al Halil, And Clinches Semi Berth For Enyimba

The final weekend of group stage play in the 2008 CAF Champions League commenced on Friday:

At Omduram, Sudan:

A 2-2 draw on the road, thanks to Alain Djikadi's stoppage time equalizer, kept TP Mazembe alive in the race for a semifinal berth out of Group B, while at the same time eliminated hosts Al Hilal from the competition. The visitors from the Democratic Republic of Congo moved into second place in Group B and can advance to the semifinals should Enyimba FC from Nigeria (which, thanks to Friday's draw, has clinched a semifinal berth for themselves) win their Saturday contest at Garoua, Cameroon against Cotonsport Garoua.

Matchday #5 in group stage play in the CAF Champions League concluded Monday:

At Aba, Nigeria:

In a match postponed from Sunday due to a waterlogged pitch, Enyimba throttled visiting Al Hilal of Sudan 4-1 in Group B play to move into the top of the group standings.

CAF Champions League: Everyone Still Alive For Semifinal Berths

Matchday # 5 in the group stage of the 2008 CAF Champions League continued Sunday:

Group A:

At Cairo:

In a battle of local rivals, Zamalek settled for a 2-2 home draw with archrivals Al Ahly. Gamal Hanza (40') and Junior Agogo (51') tallied for Zamalek, while Flavio Amado (9') and Mohamed Aboutrika (70') scored for Al Ahly. Al Ahly had already clinched a berth in the semifinal round while Zamalek remained alive with one match remaining.

GROUP A STANDINGS:

1. Zamalek* (GP: 5; GD: +3; PTS: 11)
2. Dynamos (GP: 5; GD: -1; PTS: 6)

At Lumbumbashi, Democratic Republic of Congo:

Sudan's Al Halil's match with Enyimba at Aba, Nigeria was postponed Sunday because of a waterlogged pitch. The match has been rescheduled for Monday.

Dynamos Win Seals Semifinal Berth For Al Ahly

At Abidjan, Ivory Coast:

In Group A play on Saturday in the CAF Champions League, Philip Marufa scored twice (53', 90'+6) as visiting Dynamos of Zimbabwe defeated ASEC Mimosas 2-1. The win by the Zimbabwean club clinched a semifinal round berth for Egypt's Al Ahly.

CAF Champions League: Lopsided Wins For ASEC And TP Mazembe

Group stage play in the CAF Champions League continued Sunday:

At Abidjan, Ivory Coast:

ASEC Mimosas moved into second place in Group A with their convincing 3-0 home plastering of Egypt's El Zamalek.

CAF Champions League: Two 1-0 Decisions

One game from each group was contested Saturday in the CAF Champions League:

At Harare, Zimbabwe:

Egypt's Al Ahly have all but locked up a berth in the semifinal round with their 1-0 road win over Dynamos in Group A play. Mohamed Barakat scored the game's only goal at 10 minutes.

At Garoua, Cameroon:

Cotonsport Garoua defeated visiting Sudanese club Al Hilal 1-0.

Sunday marked the midway point in group stage play in the 2008 CAF Champions League.

At Cairo, Egypt:

Mohamed Abutreika's game-winning tally (90'+3) lifted Al Ahly to a 2-1 home win over Dynamos of Zimbabwe in Group A play.

At Aba, Nigeria:

In action from Group B, Enyimba International FC blanked visiting TP Mazembe of DR Congo 2-0. The hosts were powered by tallies courtesy of Ezenwa Otorogu (70') and Stephen Worgu (90')

GROUP A STANDINGS:

1. Al Ahly (GP: 3; GD: +2; PTS: 7)
2. Zamalek (GP: 3; GD: 0; PTS: 4)

One game was played Friday in Group B play in the CAF Champions League:

At Omdurman, Sudan:

Visiting Cotonsport Garoua (Cameroon) held Al Hilal to a 1-1 draw. Kelechi Osunwa opened the scoring for the hosts at 25 minutes, but Cotonsport's Baba Osmaila eqaulized in the 76th minute.
