UEFA Champions League, Group G: Bhoys Join Barca In Knockout Stage

Two games were played on Wednesday as action from Group G of the UEFA Champions League came to a close.

At Barcelona:

Barcelona (with a frustrated Lionel Messi shown here) were held to a 0-0 home draw by SL Benfica.  Despite the draw, with Celtic's win over Spartak Moscow, the Eagles had to settle for a group-stage berth in the Europa League while the Catalans won Group G.

At Glasgow, Scotland:

Kris Commons scored the winning goal in the 81st minute on his successful penalty kick as Celtic locked up a berth in the Champions League's knockout stage with their 2-1 home win over Spartak Moscow.  Shown here are Gary Hooper (left), after he had scored the Bhoys' first goal in the 21st minute, celebrating with teammates Scott Brown and Kris Commons.

UEFA Champions League, Group G: Leo The Lion Doubles For Barca; Eagles Jump Bhoys Into Second Place

Two games in Group G of the UEFA Champions League took place on Tuesday.

At Moscow:

Lionel Messi scored twice (26', 39', that's him celebrating) as Barcelona wrapped up top spot in Group G with a 3-0 road win against Spartak Moscow, eliminating the Russian club from European competition.

At Lisbon, Portugal:

Ola John (shown here celebrating) scored in the seventh minute, while Ezequiel Garay scored the winning goal in the 71st minute as SL Benfica defeated visiting Celtic 2-1.

Wednesday saw two games played in Group G of the UEFA Champions League.

At Lisbon, Portugal:




Oscar Cardozo (seen here celebrating) scored both goals (55', 69') in SL Benfica's 2-0 home blanking of Spartak Moscow.

At Glasgow, Scotland:


Tony Watt (that's him, center) scored the winning goal in the 83rd minute as Celtic, celebrating their 125th anniversary of their existance (which actually happened on Tuesday) held off visiting Barcelona 2-1, preventing the Catalans from clinching a berth in the knockout stage.

Georgios Samaras scored the winning goal in the 90th minute as Celtic battled back from behind to knock off Spartak Moscow 3-2 on the road.

Two games were played on Wednesday as Group G action in the UEFA Champions League got under way.

At Barcelona:



Lionel Messi scored twice in the second half (71', 80') as Barcelona came from behind to upend visiting Spartak Moscow 3-2.  Here's Leo the Lion scoring the game winner against Spartak's Dmitri Kombarov and goalkeeper Andriy Dykan.

At Glasgow, Scotland:



The match between Celtic and visiting SL Benfica ended in a 0-0 stalemate.  Here, we see the Eagles' Pablo Aimar with the ball, trying to hold off a challenge of the Bhoys' Scott Brown.
