Shakhtar And Werder Bremen Reach UEFA Cup Final

The semifinal round in the UEFA Cup concluded Thursday with the second games of the respective two-match sets.

At Shakhtar, Ukraine:

Goals from Jadson (17') and Ilsinho (89') powered Shakhtar Donetsk to a 2-1 home win over Dynamo Kiev in game two of their semifinal set, enabling them to win the two-game set 3-2 on aggregate and reach the UEFA Cup final.

At Hamburg, Germany:

Diego (29'), Claudio Pizarro (66'), and Frank Baumann (83') provided the goals that powered Werder Bremen to a 3-2 road win in game two against Hamburg and advance to the UEFA Cup final thanks to their scoring more goals on the road (3-2) than their Bundesliga rivals, with the score deadlocked at 3-3 on aggregate.

Werder Bremen and Shaktar Donetsk will play in the UEFA Cup final on May 20 at Istanbul, Turkey.

Next season, the tournament will be renamed the UEFA Europa League.

Well, the folks at UEFA are considering a new name for the UEFA Cup, to go along with format changes that are scheduled to take place beginning with the 2009-10 campaign. I have a suggestion---how 'bout bringing back the name of the now-defunct Cup-Winners Cup?

Heluva way to mess up a festive atmosphere.

Hundreds of Rangers fans went on the rampage when a big screen showing the match in the city's Piccadilly Gardens failed to work just before kick-off.
Fifteen officers were injured, as well as a police dog, and 42 arrests were made as hundreds of riot police and supporters fought running battles.
One fan of Rangers' Russian opponents, Zenit St Petersburg, was stabbed but his injuries were not life-threatening.

Stuff like this could jeopardize hopes of English (or British) cities hosting any more major international championship matches for the near future.

ZENIT WIN UEFA CUP TITLE

At Manchester, England:

Goals from Igor Denisov (72') and Konstatin Zurianov (90'+4) enabled Zenit Saint Petersburg to capture their first international title, defeating Rangers 2-0 in the UEFA Cup final on Wednesday.



Dominant in possession throughout, a repeat of Zenit's 4-0 semi-final triumph against FC Bayern München never looked likely as coach Dick Advocaat's former side proved difficult to break down. The Glasgow outfit had chances of their own at the start of the second half but it merely fired Zenit into life and the cup was effectively theirs 18 minutes from time when Denisov met the ball with a powerful run in midfield, found Andrei Arshavin and then collected the return before coolly sliding it to Neil Alexander's left. Zyrianov doubled the margin with virtually the last kick of the game to spark wild Zenit celebrations.







It is the second time that the trophy was won by a Russian club in the last four years (CSKA Moscow, 2005). Rangers were gunning for their first major European title since winning the UEFA Cup in 1972. At Saint Petersburg, Russia:

Pavel Pogrebnyak's double (4', 73') helped power Zenit Saint Petersburg to a 4-0 home frontier-styled fistbeating of Bayern Munich in the second game of the two clubs' series, with the Blue-White-Sky Blues taking the series 5-1 on aggregate.

At Florence, Italy:

In stark contrast to the Bayern-Zenit semifinal, no goals were scored in regulation time of either of the two matches between Rangers and Fiorentina. After 30 minutes of overtime failed to settle the issue, it came down to the penalty kick shootout. The visitors' Nacho Novo scored the game winner, enabling Rangers to win the shootout 4-2.

Rangers and Zenit will play for the UEFA Cup title on May 14 at City Stadium in Manchester, England.

Thanks to Ferreira Lucio's own goal (62'), Zenit Saint Petersburg gained a 1-1 road draw in game one of their two-game series with Bayern Munich, whose Franck Ribery scored at 19 minutes.

At Glasgow, Scotland:

Guests Fiorentina and Rangers battled to a 0-0 stalemate in game one of their series.

Thanks to Pavel Pogrebnyak's double (39', 78'), Zenit Saint Petersburg blanked visiting Marseille in game two 2-0, enabling the Russian club to come back from losing the series opener to take the series because of the away goals rule, even though the aggregate score was 3-3.

At Liverpool, England:

After Everton took game two at home 2-0 to deadlock their series (2-2 on aggregate) with Fiorentina, it would be the Italian club that would come out on top by outscoring the Toffees in the penalty kick shootout 4-2.

At Hamburg, Germany:

Despite losing game two 3-2 on the road, Bayer Leverkusen still advanced to the quarterfinal round. Even though they and Hamburg had three goals apiece on aggregate, the Factory Squad still advanced because they had two away goals to HSV's none. Sergej Barbarez (19') and Theofanis Gekas (55') provided the goals that sent Leverkusen through to the round of 8.

At Eindhoven, Netherlands:

After Dimitar Berbatov's goal at 81 minutes of game two for Tottenham Hotspur forced the English club's series with homestanding PSV Eindhoven into overtime (with the series deadlocked on aggregate 1-1) in which neither club scored. PSV would go on to win the penalty kick shootout 6-5 to advance to the quarterfinals.

At Getafe, Spain:

Albin scored what turned out to be a series insurance goal (77') as Getafe took game two 1-0 at home and their series with SL Benfica on aggregate 3-1.

At Bremen, Germany:

Despite losing 1-0 on the road, Rangers still won their series with Werder Bremen, taking the two-game set 2-1 on aggregate.

At Lisbon, Portugal:

Bruno Pereirinha scored the only goal of the match 85') which enabled Sporting to win game two at home 1-0 over Bolton, enabling the Lions to take their two-game set with the Trotters 2-1 on aggregate.

At Villarreal, Spain:

Zenit Saint Petersburg captured their two-game set with Villarreal despite dropping game two of series on the road 2-1. With the series deadlocked 2-2 on total goals, the Russian club advanced to the round of 16 because they scored the lone road goal of the series. That was scored Thursday by Pavel Pogrebnyak at 31 minutes.

At Leverkusen, Germany:

After their scoreless road draw last week, Bayer Leverkusen exploded for five goals on Thursday to finish off Galatasaray 5-1 for both game two and the series. Sergej Barbarez scored twice (12', 22') to help lead the Leverkusen offensive onslaught.

At Getafe (near Madrid), Spain:

After being held to a 1-1 road draw last week, Getafe defeated AEK Athens at home 3-0 to take their two game set 4-1. Esteban Granero (45'+1), Cosmin Contra (PK-82'), and Braulio (84') provided the scoring punch for The Dark Blues.

At Liverpool, England:

Yakubu Ayegbeni's triple (36', 54', 72') helped Everton demolish visiting SK Brann 6-1 in game two to easily take their two-game set with the Norwegian club 8-1 on aggregate.

At Braga, Portugal:

Werder Bremen advanced to the round of 16 following their 1-0 road win over Sporting Braga, enabling the German club to win their series rather handily, 4-0 on aggregate. Ivan Klasnic scored the only goal of game two at 78 minutes.

At Moscow:

Despite losing game two 2-0 on the road, Marseille still advanced because of their earlier 3-0 home win over Spartak Moscow, thus the French club won the two-game set, 3-2 on aggregate. Aleksandr Pavlenko (39') and Roman Pavlychenko (85') scored in a gallant effort for the Red-Whites.

At Helsingborg, Sweden:

Mike Zonneveld (47') and Danko Lazovic (65') each scored once to lead PSV Eindhoven to a 2-1 game two road win over Helsingborgs IF, enabling the long-time Dutch club to finish off their opponents on aggregate 4-1.

At Bordeaux, France:

Thomas Chatelle scored the series-winning goal 34 minutes, pacing RSC Anderlecht to a 1-1 road draw with Bordeaux, enabling the Belgian club to take the two-game series on aggregate, 3-2.

At Athens:

Nacho Novo scored the series-winning goal at 81 minutes, enabling Rangers to gain a 1-1 road draw with Panithinaikos and advance to the round of 16 because of the away goals rule, as the score tied at 1-1 after two games, and the Glasgow club scored the series' lone road goal.

At Basel, Switzerland:

Liedson scored twice (41', 51') to lead visiting Sporting to a 3-0 road win over FC Basel to wrap their two-game series on aggregate 5-0.

At Munich, Germany:

Lukas Podolski tallied twice (71', 77') to help lead Bayern Munich to a 5-1 home fistbeating of Aberdeen, enabling the German club to handily take their two-game set 7-3 on aggregate.

With goals courtesy of Fabio Liverani (38') and Daniele Cacia (81'), Fiorentina defeated visiting Rosenborg 2-1 to take their two-game set 3-1 on aggregate.

At London:

With their game two 1-1 home draw, Tottenham Hotspur advanced, besting Slavia Prague on aggregate for their two-game series, 3-2. Jamie O'Hara scored for Spurs at 7 minutes.

At Madrid:

A scoreless stalemate on the road propelled Bolton Wanderers into a round-of-16 encounter with Sporting as the English club took the two game set with Atletico Madrid 1-0 on aggregate.

At Nuremberg, Germany:

A 2-2 road draw against FC Nurnberg (thanks to super late goals from Oscar Cardoza [90'] and Angel Di Maria [90' + 2] propelled SL Benfica into a two-game series victory on aggregate 3-2. This match turned out to a microcosm of just how bad things are going in the Bundesliga for Nurnberg.
