Miguel Aceval's equalizer in the 36th minute enabled Toronto FC to salvage a 1-1 game-one home draw with Santos Laguna. Herculez Gomes scored for the visiting Mexican club in the 30th minute.
At Monterrey, Mexico:
Jesus De Nigris scored twice in the second half (59', 71') as defending champions Monterrey dominated visiting UNAM Pumas 3-0 in their series opener.
