Four games were played Tuesday as the 2006-07 UEFA Champions League entered the knockout stage, beginning with the Round of 16.
At Eindhoven, Netherlands:
Edison Mendez (pictured here, celebrating with Carlos Calcido © AFP) knocked in the game's lone goal (61') as PSV Eindhoven took the opening game of their two-game, home-and-away, total-goals series with Arsenal at home 1-0.
At Lens, France:
Ryan Giggs (pictured here; © Getty Images) scored with a quick free kick at 83 minutes to lead Manchester United to a key 1-0 road win over Lille in the two clubs' series opener.
At Madrid:
Two first-half goals from Raul (10', 28', pictured here celebrating his first goal; © Getty Images) and one from Ruud van Nistelrooy (34') enabled Real Madrid to hold off visiting Bayern Munich 3-2 in the series opener for both clubs. The visitors' Mark van Bommel's tally at 88 minutes provided the Bundesliga champs with an important road goal to keep them alive in the series.
At Glasgow:
