Europa League: Red Devils Hang On; PSV, Twente, Udinese Advance; Potters Eliminated

15 games were played on Thursday as the Europa League's Round of 32 came to a close.


At Bilbao, Spain:

Athletic Bilbao's players celebrate their victory against Lokomotiv Moskow

Muniain scored the only goal of the match in the 61st minute as Athletic Bilbao, despite playing the final half-hour of the contest with only ten men, won game two of their two-game series 1-0 at home against Lokomotiv Moscow and, with the series at 2-2 on aggregate, advanced on the away goals rule.  Here we see that happy red-and-white vertically-striped jerseyed players from the Spanish club celebrating their series victory.

At Valencia, Spain:

Jonas scored the only goal of the match in the 24th minute as Valencia handed Stoke City a second 1-0 setback in game two at home and won their series 2-0 on aggregate.


At Enschede, Netherlands:

Nacer Chadli scored the goal which secured FC Twente's safe passage at home to Steaua

Nacer Chadli (that's him celebrating)scored the only goal of the match as FC Twente defeated Steaua Bucharest 1-0 in game two and won the series 2-0 on aggregate.

At Liege, Belgium:

Wisla Krakow's Gervasio Nunez sees red as his side's dream dies in Liege. Standard through on away goals.



A 0-0 home draw with ten-man Wisla Krakow proved to be good enough for Standard Liege as the Belgian club, with the aggregate score at 1-1, advanced on the away goals rule.  The Polish club were reduced to ten men after Gervasio Nunez was ejected via the red card in the 63rd minute, as shown here.

At Thessaloniki, Greece:

Following last week's scoreless encounter in Italy, Danilo (6'), Antonio Floro Flores (13'), and Maurizio Domizzi (PK-51') provided the series as Udinese won both game two on the road and their series with PAOK FC, 3-0 on both cases.


At Eindhoven, Netherlands:

PSV celebrate their third from Kevin Strootman as Trabzonspor look distraught.

Tim Matavz scored twice (30', 53') as PSV Eindhoven spanked visiting Trabzonspor 4-1 in game two and took out the Turkish club 6-2 on aggregate.  Here's a shot of PSV's Kevin Strootman scoring in the 38th minute.

At Bruges, Belgium:

Mame Biram Diouf fires Hannover into the next round with a 1-0 win at Club Brugge.

Mame Biram Diouf (that's him here) scored the lone goal of the match in the 21st minute as Hannover 96 won game two of their two-match series 1-0 on the road and defeated Club Brugge 3-1 on aggregate.

At Manchester, England:

Javier Hernandez scored in the 6th minute as Manchester United, despite dropping a 2-1 game-two home decision to Ajax Amsterdam, won their two-game series 3-2 on aggregate.


At Kharkiv, Ukraine:

Metalist Kharkiv players celebrate a goal against FC Salzburg.

Goals from Jonathan Cristaldo (62'), Sebastian Blanco (63'), and Bonfim Marlos (86') provided the second-half scoring as FC Metalist Kharkiv (whose players are shown here celebrating) dominated visiting FC Red Bull Salzburg 4-1 in game two and finished their two-match annihilation of the Austrian club 8-1 on aggregation.

At Piraeus, Greece:

Olympiakos' Giannis Maniatis vies for the ball with Rubin Kazan's Obafemi Martins

Rafik Djebbour scored the only goal of the match in the 14th minute as Olymiacos racked up a second straight 1-0 over FK Rubin Kazan, this time at home, and took out the Russian club 2-0 on aggregate.  Here, we see the Legend's Giannis Maniatis battling Rubin Kazan's Obafemi Martins for the ball.

At Brussels, Belgium:

Maarten Martens provided the game's lone tally in the 54th minute as AZ Alkmaar took out RSC Anderlecht 2-0 on the road after their second successive 1-0 win over the Belgian club, this time on the road.


At Madrid:

Atletico Madrid's Diego Godin celebrates after scoring against Lazio

Diego Godin (that's him celebrating) scored the only goal of the match in the 48th minute as Atletico Madrid defeated Lazio 1-0 at home in game two of their two-match series, which they won 4-1 on aggregate.

At Gelsenkirchen, Germany:

Schalke's Klaas-Jan Huntelaar celebrates scoring the opening goal against FC Viktoria Plzen

Klass-Jan Huntelaar delivered three goals, one in regulation time (7', that's him celebrating with teammates) as Schalke 04 gained a 1-1 home draw in game two with FC Viktoria Plzen, then scored twice more in overtime (106', 120') as the German club won their two-match series 4-2 on aggregate.

At Istanbul, Turkey:

Braga's Lima celebrates with team-mate Alan after scoring against Besiktas

Despite dropping a 1-0 home decision to Sporting Braga in game two (the Portuguese club's Rodrigo Lima celebrating after scoring in the 25th minute as shown here) , Besiktas still won their two-game series 2-1 on aggregate.

At Lisbon, Portugal:

Legia's Jakub Rzezniczak, right, jumps for the ball with Sporting's Emiliano Insua,

Matias Fernandez scored the only goal of the match in the 84th minute as Sporting CP shut out visiting Legia Warsaw 1-0 in game two and won their series 3-2 on aggregate.   Here, we see Legia's Jakub Rzezniczak battling with the Lions' Emiliano Insua for the ball.
