Five games were played on Wednesday as the playoff round for UEFA Champions League group-stage berth came to a close.
At Nicosia, Cyprus:
Nemanja Maksimovic scored the historic series-winning goal in the 84th minute as FC Astana gained a 1-1 game-two road draw with APOEL FC and won their series 2-1 on aggregate to become the first club from Kazakhstan to ever qualify for the Champions League's group stage.
At Belgrade, Serbia:
Despite dropping a 2-1 game-two road decision to Partizan Belgrade, FC BATE Borisov, with the aggregate score at 2-2, still advanced on away goals. Igor Stasevich delivered the goal in the 25th minute that ultimately sent the Belorussian club into another Champions League group-stage appearance.
At Leverkusen, Germany:
Hakan Calhanoglu (40'), Admir Mehmedi (48'), and Karim Bellarabi (88') each scored a goal as Bayer Leverkusen overturned their series-opening road defeat with a 3-0 home domination in game two against Lazio and knocked out the Italian club 3-1 on aggregate.
At Bruges, Belgium:
Wayne Rooney delivered a natural hat trick (20', 49', 57') as Manchester United demolished Club Brugge 4-0 on the road in game two and ousted the Belgian club 7-1 on aggregate and advanced to the group stage for the 20th time.
At Khimki, Russia:
Seydou Doumbia scored twice (49', 72') while Ahmed Musa scored what proved to be the series-winning goal in the 85th minute as CSKA Moscow defeated Sporting CP 3-1 in game two and eliminated the visiting Portuguese club 4-3 on aggregate.
The ten clubs that were eliminated from Champions League contention over the past two days will play in the Europa League's group stage.
