UEFA Champions League, Group G: Bhoys Join Barca In Knockout Stage

Two games were played on Wednesday as action from Group G of the UEFA Champions League came to a close.

At Barcelona:



Barcelona (with a frustrated Lionel Messi shown here) were held to a 0-0 home draw by SL Benfica.  Despite the draw, with Celtic's win over Spartak Moscow, the Eagles had to settle for a group-stage berth in the Europa League while the Catalans won Group G.

At Glasgow, Scotland:



Kris Commons scored the winning goal in the 81st minute on his successful penalty kick as Celtic locked up a berth in the Champions League's knockout stage with their 2-1 home win over Spartak Moscow.  Shown here are Gary Hooper (left), after he had scored the Bhoys' first goal in the 21st minute, celebrating with teammates Scott Brown and Kris Commons.

FINAL GROUP G STANDINGS:

1. Barcelona (GP: 6; GD: +6; PTS: 13)
2. Celtic (GP: 6; GD: +1; PTS: 10)
3. SL Benfica (GP: 6; GD: 0; PTS: 8)
4. Spartak Moscow (GP: 6; GD: -7; PTS: 3)

Barcelona and Celtic locked up Champions League knockout-stage berths while SL Benfica qualified for the knockout stage of the Europa League.
