At Split, Croatia:
Hugo Campagnaro scored the lone goal (42') of Sampdoria's 1-0 series-opening road win over Hajduk Split.
At Anjalankoski, Finland:
Roque Santa Cruz celebrated his birthday by scoring the only goal (6') in Blackburn's 1-0 road win over MyPa in game one.
At Budapest, Hungary:
Visiting Hamburg and Budapest Honved FC battled to a 0-0 stalemate.
At Berne, Switzerland:
BSC Young Boys settled for a 1-1 home deadlock with Lens. Tiago Calvano gave BSC a 1-0 lead with his goal 20 minutes from full time, but the French club's Olivier Monterrubio equalized within five mintes.
At Madrid:
Atletico Madrid, in their series opener, manhandled visiting FK Vojvodina 3-0. Maxi Rodriguez, Maniche, and Diego Forlan provided the scoring punch for Atletico.
