Cristian Baez's successfully-converted 85th-minute penalty kick carried Club Guarani to a series-opening 1-0 road victory over San Jose.
At Montevideo, Uruguay:
Fidel Martinez (22') and Emmanuel Martinez (48') each scored once as Ecuador's Barcelona SC blanked Progreso 2-0 on the road in their series opener.
