UEFA Cup Action, Thursday, September 14

Okay, boys and girls, time now for a rundown of Thursday's action in the first proper round of the 2006-07 UEFA Cup. The winners of these two-game, home-and-away, total goals series would advance to the group stage, with the 40 winning clubs split into eight groups of five teams each. The return matches will take place on September 28.

At Gelsenkirchen, Germany:

A late goal by Soren Larsen lifted homestanding FC Schalke 04 to a 1-0 win over AS Nancy-Lorraine. Details here.

Viorel Moldolvan, in the 43rd minute, scored the only goal in Rapid Bucharest's 1-0 series-opening win against CD Nacional of Portugal.


At Lillestrom, Norway:

In a battle of two teams who were bounced out of the UEFA Champions League by losing in the third round of qualifying, Austria Vienna and homestanding Legia Warsaw played to a 1-1 draw. Stats here.

In another match featuring two teams eliminated from UEFA Champions League by losing in the third round of qualifying, homestanding FC Slovan Liberec, on goals by Tomas Frejlach (43') and Jan Blazek (90') shut out Red Star Belgrade 2-0. Stats here.


At Odessa, Ukraine:

Luciano De Bruno scored the only goal of the match in the 74th minute, propelling visiting Israeli club Hapoel Tel-Aviv to a 1-0 road win over FC Chornomorets Odessa. Stats here.

German Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen and Swiss club FC Sion ended their first match the way they started, deadlocked at 0-0. Stats here.


At Nijmegen, Netherlands:

In front of a crowd of 300, in what was designated their home game because of the political situation in their home country, Maccabi Haifa of Israel took on Bulgarian side PFC Litex Lovech in a match that ended in a 1-1 deadlock. Stats here.

Gustavo Lopez scored the only goal of the match, in the 38th minute, lifting visiting Spanish club Celta Vigo to a 1-0 win over Royal Standard de Liege. Stats here.
