Europa League

23 games were played on Thursday as group-stage play in the Europa League continued

Group A:

At Moscow:

Christopher Samba (72') and Samuel Eto'o (75') provided the scoring touch as FC Anzhi Makhachkala defeated visiting Udinese 2-0 lock up a berth in the Europa League's knockout stage and eliminate the Italian club from European competition.

At Liverpool, England:

Raul Bobadilla (52') and Elsad Zverotic (88') provided the goals that carried BSC Young Boys to a 2-2 road draw with Liverpool, keeping the Swiss club's chances of advancing to the knockout stage very much alive.  Jonjo Shelvey (33') and Joe Cole (72') provided the scoring for the Reds.

At Coimbra, Portugal:

Pavel Horvath's penalty kick in the 57th minute enabled FC Viktoria Plzen to gain a 1-1 road draw with Academica de Coimbra, good enough for the Czech club to advance to the knockout stage.  Edinho equalized for the hosts in the 88th minute but Academica were eliminated from European competition.

Igor de Camargo scored twice in the final minutes (79', 90'+1) as Borussia Monchengladbach locked up a knockout-stage berth with their 2-0 home win over AEL Limassol, condemning the Cypriot club to a last-place finish in Group C.

At Marseilles, France:

Bekir Irtegun scored the only goal of the match in the 40th minute as Fenerbahce defeated Marseille 1-0 on the road, sending the Yellow Canaries into the Europa League's knockout stage, which will go on minus the French hosts.

At Bruges, Belgium:

Jussie Ferreira Vieira scored twice in the first half (3', 40') as Bordeaux moved to the top of the Group D standings and clinched a berth in the knockout stage with their 2-1 road win over Club Brugge.

At Molde, Norway:

Cesar Santin (PK-21') and Rurik Gislason (76') provided the scoring as FC Copenhagen kept their Round-of-32 hopes alive following their 2-1 road win over Molde, eliminating the newly re-crowned Norwegian Eliteserien champs from the tournament.

Edinson Cavani scored the game winner in stoppage time (90'+3) as Napoli locked up a berth in the knockout stage by eliminating AIK 2-1 on the road.

At Basel, Switzerland:

Fabian Schar (23'), Valentin Stocker (66'), and David Degen (71') provided the scoring as FC Basel jumped Videoton into second place in the Group G standings with one game remaining following their 3-0 home domination of Sporting CP, eliminating the Lions from the tournament.

Jose Rondon scored twice (86', 72') as FC Rubin Kazan downed visiting Inter Milan 3-0 in a match featuring two clubs who already laid claim to knockout-stage berths.  The Russian club assured themselves of finishing atop Group H.

At Baku, Azerbaijan:

Aleksandar Mitrovic equalized in the 67th minute, lifting Partizan Belgrade to a 1-1 road draw with FC Neftchi Baku.  Flavinho scored in the 10th minute for the hosts as both clubs will exit European competition in two weeks.

At Prague, Czech Republic:

Josef Husbauer equalized in the 53rd minute as Sparta Prague locked up a berth in the knockout stage with their 1-1 home draw with already Round-of-32 bound Lyon.  Yassine Benzia scored for the French club in the 46th minute.


Ironi Kiryat Shmona's scheduled home contest with Athletic Bilbao has been postponed indefinitely on Wednesday by UEFA due to the ongoing security situation in Israel.  A decision on rescheduling of the match is expected to be made at a future date by UEFA.  With Sparta Prague's home draw with Lyon, both clubs were eliminated from European competition.

Despite being held to a 0-0 home draw by Tottenham Hotspur, Lazio still locked up a berth in the knockout stage.

In a battle of knockout-stage clubs, Jonathan Cristaldo (46') and Cleiton Xavier (85') each scored a goal as FC Metalist Kharkiv clinched the Group K title with their 2-0 blanking of visiting Bayer Leverkusen.

FC Twente held knockout-stage-bound home-standing Hannover 96 to a 0-0 stalemate.
