CONCACAF Champions League: Preliminary Round Concludes

The preliminary round of the 2008-09 CONCACAF Champions League concluded Thursday:

At La Chorrera, Panama:

Doubles each from Alberto Zapata (8', 75') and Juan Ramon Solis (17', 72') helped power San Francisco FC to a 5-0 home bludgeoning of Deportivo Jalapa of Guatemala in game two of the their two-match set, enabling the Panamanian club to easily overturn their 1-0 road defeat from last week and win their two-match set 5-1 on aggregate and advance to the group stage.

At Mexico City:

Francisco Palencia scored twice (65', 90'+2) and Jehu Chiapas once (89') as UNAM Pumas overpowered ten-man Harbour View FC (Jamaica) 3-0 in winning the only game between these two clubs (last week's scheduled match at Kingston, Jamaica was cancelled due to concerns over Hurricane Gustav). Pumas will now join the group stage.

The action starts on September 16. Each team plays each other team in its' group twice. The top two clubs in each group would qualify for the knockout stage, starting with the quarterfinal round.
