Fred scored the game-winning goal at 50 minutes on Wednesday night to lift DC United to a 2-1 win over the Charleston Battery (USL-1) to capture their first Lamar Hunt US Open Cup championship since 1996. Luciano Emilio scored DC's first goal in the fourth minute. Ian Fuller accounted for the lone Charleston goal in the 10th minute.
The victory assured DC United of a spot in the 2009-2010 CONCACAF Champions League. They are in the group stage of this season's edition.
