2011 Copa Libertadores Preliminary Round: Cerro Porteno and Union Espanola Take Series Openers

The opening week of the preliminary round of this year's Copa Libertadores concluded with two games played on Thursday.

At Asuncion, Paraguay:

Roberto Antonio Nanni scored the only goal of the match at 70 minutes as Cerro Porteno took all three points from the opening game of their two-game set with Deportivo Petare, beating the visiting Venezuelan club 1-0.  The return match is scheduled to take place next Thursday in Caracas, Venezuela.  The winner of this two-game series will join Santos (Brazil), Colo-Colo (Chile), and Deportivo Tachira (Venezuela) in Group Five.

At La Paz, Bolivia:

Fernando Cordero provided the game's only goal at 17 minutes as Union Espanola (Chile) defeated hosts Bolivar 1-0 and picked up all three points in the opening match of their two-game series.  The return contest is scheduled to take play next Thursday at Santiago, Chile.  Whoever wins this two-match set will join Caracas FC (Venezuela), Universidad Catolica (Chile), and Velez Sarsfield (Argentina) in Group Four.

Two groups already have their full complement of four teams each.

Group One:

Universidad San Martin (Peru)
Club Libertad (Paraguay)
Once Caldas (Colombia)
San Luis (Mexico)

Group Three:

Argentinos Juniors (Argentina)
Club Nacional (Uruguay)
Fluminense (Brazil)
Club America (Mexico)
