Independiente Take Series Opener As Qualifying Round For Copa Libertadores Group Stage Berths Commences

At Avellaneda, Argentina:

Matias De Federico (49') and Patricio Rodriguez (70') provided the scoring punch as Independiente defeated visiting Deportivo Quito 2-0 on Tuesday in the opening contest of a two-game  series as the preliminary round of the Copa Libertadores commenced.  The two teams will go at it again next Tuesday in the Ecuadorian capital with the winner of this two-match series (determined on points with Independiente now leading the series three points to nil) advancing to the group stage, winding up in Group Eight, joining the likes of LDU Quito (Ecuador), Penarol (Uruguay), and Godoy Cruz (Argentina).
