DC UNITED SHOCK RSL ON ROAD FOR THIRD US OPEN CUP TITLE (AND BERTH IN 2014-15 CONCACAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE)

Lewis Neal scored the only goal of the match in the 45th minute on Tuesday as DC United knocked off home-standing Real Salt Lake 1-0 for their third Lamar Hunt US Open Cup championship (their first since 2007).  The victory (their overall performance in this tournament) was one of the few highlights in a season in which they had a dismal time in Major League Soccer play, locked up for the guests a berth in the group stage of next season's CONCACAF Champions League.

DC United Cans Coach

Well, when your team is sitting in the bottom of the overall league standings, let alone sitting at the foot of the Eastern Conference standings, perhaps it is time to make a coaching change.

Ben Olsen, who had a great career as a player for DC United, becomes the struggling club's new head coach.

At least on an interim basis, that is.

Good luck, Ben.  Still, United seems poised to miss the MLS Cup playoffs for the third year running.

Curt Onalfo, a former DC United player, was named Monday as the Washington, DC Major League Soccer Club's new head coach.

Major League Soccer expansion club Seattle Sounders FC, on goals courtesy of Fredy Montero (67') and Roger Levesque (86'), held off--and detroned--hosts and defending champions DC United 2-1 to win the US Open Cup championship Wednesday night. The Sounders have assured themselves of at least playing in the qualifying round for the 2010-11 CONCACAF Champions League. Before 72, 368 fans at FedEx Field, goals from Gonzalo Higuain and Arjen Robben helped guide Real Madrid to a 3-0 win over DC United at an exhibition match on Sunday.

RATS! DC United Miss Playoff For First Time Since 2002

At Columbus, Ohio:

Brad Evans provided the only goal of the match that saw the Columbus Crew, winners of the 2008 Supporters Shield for finishing with the best record in Major League Soccer, defeat DC United 1-0 at home, knocking United out of the playoffs for the first time since 2002.

New Look To DC United Uniforms

It was announced to Tuesday that Volkswagen has reached a five-year agreement with DC United.

The deal coincides with a partnership announced today between Major League Soccer and Volkswagen that makes the car company the league's official automotive sponsor, providing the carmaker with MLS and collective team marks, logos and marketing assets at events including the Pepsi MLS All-Star Game and the MLS Cup, the league's championship game."With Volkswagen's roots already embedded in the sport, this is a partnership that makes sense at both the club and league levels," Doug Quinn, president, Soccer United Marketing, said in a statement.Under the automaker's partnership with D.C. United, the team will debut new uniforms featuring the Volkswagen logo, the first corporate insignia to adorn team jerseys, during a nationally televised game with the Chicago Fire on Thursday night, the automaker said.
