After a 1-1 deadlock through 120 minutes, Celso Borges, Bryan Ruiz (who had scored in the 52nd minute in regulation), Giancarlo Gonzalez, Joel Campbell, and Michael Umana all converted their spot kicks as Costa Rica reached the quarterfinal round for the first time following their 5-3 penalty-kick shootout victory over Greece, despite finishing with ten men after losing the services of Oscar Duarte in the 66th minute after he received his second yellow card.  Ticos goalkeeper Keylor Neves (pictured here) did his part by saving Theofanis Gekas' spot kick during the shootout.
