Canadian Championship: Reds Smoke Fury, Will Face Impact In Final


At Toronto:


On Wednesday night, Eddie Edward (OG-41'), Tsubasa Endoh (42'), Marky Delgado (80'), and Sebastian Giovinco (85') each scored a goal as Toronto FC demolished the visiting Ottawa Fury 4-0 in game two of their Canadian Championship semifinal series and ousted the USL club 5-2 on aggregate.

The Reds will face the Montreal Impact in the two-game final, set to open in Montreal on June 21 and conclude in Toronto on June 27.

US Open Cup

12 games were contested on Wednesday as the third round of the US Open Cup tournament concluded.

At Rochester, New York:

Samuel Edoung-Biyo scored the winning goal in the opening minute of stoppage time at the conclusion of the second overtime period as the Rochester Rhinos (USL) defeated GPS Omens (USASA) 2-1.

At Jacksonville, Florida:

Drew Beckie's own goal in the 21st minute proved decisive as the Charleston Battery (USL) knocked off the NASL's Jacksonville Armada 1-0 on the road.

At Cincinnati:

In a battle of USL clubs, Baye Djiby Fall scored the game's lone goal in the 49th minute as FC Cincinnati defeated visiting Louisville City 1-0.

At Cary, North Carolina:

Nazmi Albadawi scored twice (51', 82') as North Carolina FC (NASL) dominated the visiting Charlotte Independence (USL) 4-1.

At Miami:

Vincenzo Rennella (PK-73') and Jaime Chavez (83') each scored once as the NASL's Miami FC blanked the visiting Tampa Bay Rowdies of the USL 2-0.

At Reading, Pennsylvania:

Jake Bond scored twice (16', 50') as the Harrisburg City Islanders (USL) dominated Reading United AC (PDL) 3-0 on the road.

At Chicago:

Levi Houapeu's goal in the opening minute held up as Christos FC from the USASA knocked off the PDL's Chicago FC United 1-0 on the road.  With defeats suffered by not only United, but Reading United as well, there are no fourth-division clubs left in the tournament, as Baltimore-based fifth-division Christos would be the only non-professional club to reach the fourth round.

At Tulsa, Oklahoma:

After 120 scoreless minutes, the Tulsa Roughnecks, with Joey Calistri, Juan Pablo Caffa, Ian Svantesson, Fabian Cerda, Modou Jadama, Collin Fernandez, and Francisco Ugarte converting their spot kicks, won the penalty-kick shootout 7-6 over visiting San Antonio FC in another battle of USL clubs.

At Colorado Springs, Colorado:

Jose Barril (73') and Wojciech Wojcik (84') each scored once as the Oklahoma City Energy knocked off the Colorado Springs Switchbacks 2-1 on the road in another all-USL contest.

At Scottsdale, Arizona:

Kyle Bekker (81') and Tom Heinemann (90'+4) each scored a goal as the NASL's San Francisco Deltas defeated the USL's Phoenix Rising 2-1 on the road.

At Azusa, California:

Roy Meeus scored the only goal of the match in the 41st minute as Orange County SC (USL) took out the Los Angeles Wolves of the USASA 1-0 on the road.

At Sacramento, California:

In still another battle between USL clubs, Harry Williams (41') and Trevin Caesar (59') each scored once as the Sacramento Republic defeated visiting Reno 1868 FC 2-0.

MLS: Busy Wednesday

Four games were contested in Major League Soccer on Wednesday.

At Columbus, Ohio:

Federico Higuain (10'), Justin Meram (21'), and Ola Kamara (59') each scored once as the Columbus Crew dominated the visiting Seattle Sounders 3-0.

At New York City:

Kei Kamara (24') and Xavier Kouassi (86') each scored once to lift the New England Revolution to a 2-2 road draw with New York City.  Jack Harrison (16') and Miguel Camargo (64') delivered the Citizens' goals.

At Orlando, Florida:

Cyle Larin (66') and Giles Barnes (88') each produced a goal as Orlando City snapped their six-match winless run with a 2-0 home blanking of DC United.

At Houston:

Justin Schmidt (OG-3'), Alex (15'), Mauro Manotas (45'), Erick Torres (52'), and Leonardo (68') each scored once as the Houston Dynamo climbed up to the top of the Western Conference standings following their 5-1 demolition of visiting Real Salt Lake.

AFC Champions League: Shanghai SIPG, Urawa Reds Advance To Quarterfinals

The AFC Champions League's Round of 16 concluded on Wednesday with two East Region games.

At Nanjing, China:

Elkeson (34'), Yang Xiaotian (OG-43'), and Hulk (90'+4) each scored once as Shanghai SIPG defeated Jiangsu Suning 3-2 on the road in game two and won their two-match series 5-3 on aggregate.

At Saitama, Japan:

After Shinzo Koroki (18') and Tadanari Lee (33') each scored once in regulation to lift Urawa Red Diamonds to a 2-2 series-aggregate stalemate with visiting Jeju United after their 2-0 regulation win in game two, Ryota Moriwaki scored the series-winning goal for the Japanese club in the 114th minute as the Reds won the series 3-2 on aggregate after overtime.

Lamar Hunt US Open: Saint Louis Dump Bucks On Road

At Pontiac, Michigan:

In the opening contest of the third round of the US Open Cup tournament on Tuesday, Sebastian Dalgaard scored twice (13'. 16') as Saint Louis FC (USL) held off the Michigan Bucks (PDL) 2-1 on the road.

Up next for Saint Louis, a fourth-round home contest at Fenton, Missouri against the Chicago Fire from Major League Soccer, set for June 13 or 14.

Canadian Championship: Impact Oust Caps, Get Fury-Reds Winner

At Montreal:

Ignacio Piatti converted two penalty kicks (20', 28') while Blerim Dzemaili (38') and Anthony Jackson-Hamel (61') each added a goal on Tuesday night as the Montreal Impact overturned their series-opening road defeat of last week with a 4-2 game-two home victory on Tuesday against the Vancouver Whitecaps and won their two-game Amway Canadian Championship semifinal series 5-4 on aggregate.

The Impact will face the winner of the Ottawa Fury-Toronto FC series (which will be decided on Wednesday in Toronto with the USL's Fury up 2-1 on aggregate) in the two-game final, set to open on June 21.

AFC Champions League

Four games were contested in the Round of 16 in the AFC Champions League on Tuesday.

WEST REGION:

At Rayyan, Qatar (due to deteriorating relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran):

Thanks to goals courtesy of Omar Khirbin (16') and Salem Al Dawsari (82'), Al-Hilal (Saudi Arabia) posted a second 2-1 victory over Esteghlal Khuzestan (Iran) and took their two-game series 4-2 on aggregate.

At Doha, Qatar:

An own goal in the 23rd minute from Chico Flores propelled Persepolis to a 1-0 game-two road win over Lekhwiya and a series aggregate victory by that same score.



EAST REGION:

At Kawasaki, Japan:

Kawasaki Frontale, with goals from Yu Kobayashi (31'), Tatsuya Hasegawa (32'), Eduardo Neto (40'), and Rhayner Santos Nascimento (79'),  dominated visiting Muangthong United 4-1 in game two and won their two-match series 7-2 on aggregate.

At Kashima, Japan:

Paulinho scored the series-winning goal in the 55th minute as Guangzhou Evergrande, despite dropping a 2-1 game-two road decision to Kashima Antlers, won their series with the Japanese club on away goals with the aggregate score at 2-2.

TERRIERS WIN PK THRILLER WITH ROYALS TO RETURN TO TOP FLIGHT IN ENGLAND AFTER 45-YEAR ABSENCE

At London:

After 120 scoreless minutes at Wembley Stadium on Monday, Chris Lowe, Nahki Wells, Aaron Mooy, and Christopher Schindler each converted a spot kick as Huddersfield Town defeated Reading 4-3 in the penalty-kick shootout of the English Football League Championship promotion playoff final.

With the victory, the Terriers will be joining Newcastle United and Brighton & Hove Albion in gaining promotion to the English Premier League, putting Huddersfield in the top flight of English Soccer for the first time since 1972.

AFC Champions League: Al-Ain, Al-Ahli Saudi Advance To Quarterfinals

The second half of AFC Champions League Round-of-16 play commenced on Monday with two games, both in the West Region.

At Al Ain, United Arab Emirates:

Ciao Lucas Fernandes (27', 44') and Omar Abdulrahman (49', 60') each scored twice as Al-Ain destroyed visiting Esteghlal 6-1 in game two and took out the Iranian club 6-2 on aggregate.

At Dubai, United Arab Emirates:


Taisir Al-Jassim (18'), Housain Al-Mogahwi (24'), and Saad Abdul-Amir (PK-72') each scored a goal as Al-Ahli Saudi FC defeated Al-Ahli Dubai FC 3-1 on the road in game two and won their series 4-2 on aggregate.

GUNNERS KNOCK OFF CHELSEA TO WIN 13TH FA CUP TITLE

At London:

Alex Sanchez (4') and Aaron Ramsey (79') each scored once on Saturday as Arsenal defeated Chelsea 2-1 in the FA Cup Final contested at Wembley Stadium.

The Gunners have now won 13 FA Cups and their embattled manager Arsene Wenger has now won a record seven.

With Arsenal having already clinched a berth in the group stage of next season's Europa League due to their fifth-place finish in the recently-concluded English Premier League season, Everton---the highest-finishing club who hadn't qualified for Europe---will enter the Europa League through the third round of qualifying.

MLS: Sounders, DC, Red Bulls, Rapids, Loons, RSL, Galaxy Garner Saturday Victories

Seven games were on the Major League Soccer docket for Saturday.

At Seattle:

Cristian Roldan scored the only goal of the match in the fourth minute as the Seattle Sounders defeated the visiting Portland Timbers 1-0 in a Cascadia Cup clash.

At Vancouver, British Columbia:

Lamar Neagle successfully converted his penalty kick in the 61st minute while Bill Hamid made four saves in preserving the shutout and victory as DC United knocked off the Vancouver Whitecaps 1-0.

At Harrison, New Jersey:

Bradley Wright-Phillips (47') and Daniel Royer (74') each scored once as the New York Red Bulls upended the visiting New England Revolution 2-1.

At Toronto:

In the lone Friday Major League Soccer contest, Victor Vazquez scored twice (PK-6', 59') as Toronto FC, despite finishing to game with ten men, destroyed the visiting Columbus Crew 5-0.

The victory stretched the Reds' unbeaten run in league games to eight games (seven wins and a draw).

At Bridgeview, Illinois:

In Thursday's lone Major League Soccer contest, the Chicago Fire, with Nemanja Nikolic (3') and David Accam (10') each scoring once, defeated visiting FC Dallas 2-1.

Copa Libertadores: Group-Stage Concludes

Copa Libertadores group-stage concluded on Thursday with six games.

GROUP ONE:

At Medellin, Colombia:

Xavier Arreaga (26') and Dario Aimar (67') each scored an own goal as Atletico Nacional defeated visiting Barcelona SC 3-1 in their tournament finale while the defeat prevented the Ecuadorian club from locking up the Group One title (they had already clinched a berth in the knockout stage).

At Quilmes, Argentina:

Augusto Solari scored the only goal of the match in the 24th minute as Estudiantes prepared for Copa Sudamericana play by knocking off visiting Botafogo 1-0, though the Brazilian club locked up top spot in Group One.

At Guayaquil, Ecuador:

Carols Alfredo Orejuela Quinonez (27'), Pedro Quinonez (49'), and Brayan Angulo Tenorio (78') each scored a goal as Club Sport Emelec advanced to the knockout stage following their 3-0 home domination of Peru's FBC Melgar.

Copa Libertadores group-stage continued on Wednesday with two games.

GROUP FIVE:

At Montevideo, Uruguay:

Junior Arias (36') and Ivan Villaba (41') each scored a goal as Penarol, despite being eliminated from South American competition, concluded their Copa Libertadores stint in a blaze of glory by knocking off visiting (and Round-of-16-bound) Jorge Wilstermann 2-0.

At Sao Paulo, Brazil:

Yerry Mina (14'), Willian (68'), and Ze Roberto (90') each scored once as Palmeiras laid claim to top spot in Group Five with a 3-1 home win over Atletico Tucuman, who will be playing in the second stage of the Copa Sudamericana.

At Solna, Sweden:

Paul Pogba (18') and Henrikh Mkhitaryan (48') each scored once on Wednesday as Manchester United blanked Ajax Amsterdam 2-0 in the Europa League Final.

With the victory, the Red Devils (seen here celebrating with the Europa League trophy) will not only play the winner of the UEFA Champions League Final (Juventus vs. Real Madrid) on August 8 at Skopje, Macedonia, they will also play in the group stage of next season's Champions League.

Copa Libertadores

The final week of Copa Libertadores group-stage play opened on Tuesday with four games.

GROUP TWO:

At Santos, Brazil:

David Braz scored twice (19', 71') as Santos demolished visiting Sporting Cristal 4-0 in the Peruvian club's tournament finale.

At Bogota, Colombia:

Javier Lopez's own goal in the 38th minute lifted The Strongest to a 1-1 road draw with Independiente Santa Fe---and a berth in the Copa Libertadores' knockout stage.  Damir Ceter scored for the now-Copa Sudamericana-bound hosts in the 25th minute.

Final Group Two Standings:

1. Santos (GP: 6; GD: +7; PTS: 12)
2. The Strongest (GP: 6; GD: +4; PTS: 9)
3. Independiente Santa Fe (GP: 6; GD: +2; PTS: 8)

AFC Champions League

Two games---both in the West Region---were contested on Monday as the knockout stage of the AFC Champions League commenced, opening with the Round of 16.

At Tehran, Iran:

Kaveh Rezaei scored the only goal of the match in the second minute of second-half stoppage time, thanks to his successfully-converted penalty kick as Esteghlal took the opening match if their series with Al-Ain 1-0 at home.

At Jeddah, Saudi Arabia:

Abdulfattah Tawfiq Asiri's equalizer in the 38th minute enabled Al-Ahli Saudi FC to salvage a series-opening 1-1 home deadlock with Al-Ahli FC from the Emirates.  Khamis Esmaeel scored for the guests in the 21st minute.

Diego Fagundez scored twice (24', 34') as the New England Revolution came from behind to knock off the Columbus Crew 2-1 on the road.

At Minneapolis:

Christian Ramirez scored twice, once for his team in the 66th minute, then, accidentally, once for the opponents in the 84th as Superman's own goal proved the difference as the Los Angeles Galaxy defeated Minnesota United 2-1 on the road.

At Orlando, Florida:

David Villa scored twice (PK-14', 82') as New York City handed Orlando City their first defeat at their new home stadium 3-0.
