2014 FIFA World Cup Qualifying: Second Round of Qualifying Gets Started

The second round of CONCACAF region qualifying for the 2014 FIFA World Cup got under way on Friday.


Group A:


At Paramaribo, Suriname:


Friso Mando's penalty kick at 11 minutes provided all the scoring as Suriname defeated visiting Cayman Islands 1-0.


At San Salvador, El Salvador:


Rodolfo Zelaya scored twice (53', PK-77') as El Salvador defeated the visiting Dominican Republic 3-2 in a game in which all five goals were scored in the second half.


GROUP A STANDINGS:


Group B:


At Port Of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago:


Kenwyne Jones scored the only goal of the match as Trinidad and Tobago blanked visiting Bermuda 1-0.


At Providence, Guyana:


Shawn Beveney (25') and Charles Pollard (75') provided the scoring as Guyana shut out visiting Barbados 2-0.

At Roseau, Dominica:


With Raul Leguias (1') and Felix Rodriguez (36') providing the scoring, Nicaragua defeated Dominica 2-0 on the road.

2. Panama (GP: 0; GD: 0; PTS: 0)
3. Dominica (GP: 1; GD: -2; PTS: 0)


NOTE:  Bahamas, who dominated Turks and Caicos Islands 10-0 on aggregate in the opening qualifying round, withdrew from the tournament on August 19 and was not replaced. 


Group D:


At Toronto:


Josh Simpson scored twice (6', 61') as Canada overpowered visiting Saint Lucia 4-1.


At Basseterre, Saint Kitts and Nevis:


Puerto Rico and home standings Saint Kitts and Nevis battled to a 0-0 stalemate.

Group E:


At St. George's Grenada:


Deon McCauley scored twice (11', 79') Belize pummeled Grenada 3-0 on the road.


At Guatemala City:


Marco Pappa (14'), Yony Flores (30'), Mario Rodriguez (52'), and Freddy Garcia (71') each scored once as Guatemala delivered a 4-0 home fist beating to Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

3. Grenada (GP: 1; GD: -3; PTS: 0)

Group F:


At Port-au-Prince, Haiti:


Jean Alexandre scored twice (65', 77') as Haiti annihilated the visiting United States Virgin Islands 6-0.


At North Sound, Antigua:


Antigua and Barbuda didn't have much trouble dominating visiting Curacao 5-2.  Peter Byers scored twice in the second half (72', 85') to cap off the tallying for the hosts.


GROUP F:


1. Haiti (GP: 1; GD: +6; PTS: 5)
2. Antigua and Barbuda (GP: 1; GD: +3; PTS: 3)
3. Curacao (GP: 1; GD: -3; PTS: 0)
4. United States Virgin Islands (GP: 1; GD: -6; PTS: 0)


Each team plays two games against each of the other teams in its' group.  The six group winners advance to the third qualifying round where they, along with the United States, Mexico, Honduras, Jamaica, Costa Rica, and Cuba, will be split into three groups of four teams each, with the top two finishers in each group advancing to the final group of six, where the top three teams would qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the fourth-place team will face the winners from Oceania in a two-match home-and-away playoff for a place in Brazil.
