FIFA Club World Cup: Al-Sadd, Kashiwa Reysol Advance To Semis

At Toyota, Japan:


The quarterfinal round of the FIFA Club World Cup took place on Sunday with two games.

Khalfan Al Khalfan (33') and Abdulla Koni (48', shown above) provided the scoring as Asian club champs Al-Sadd held off their African counterpart Esperance ST of Tunisia 2-1 in the opening contest.  For the club from Qatar, it's a semifinal match-up with Barcelona.

In the second contest, Japanese champs Kashiwa Reysol (with Leandro Domingues tallying at 52 minutes) and Monterrey, CONCACAF titleholders (with Humberto Suazo scoring in the 57th minute) were deadlocked at 1-1 following regulation time and the subsequent 30 scoreless minutes of overtime.  In the penalty-kick shootout, Leandro Dominques, Jorge Wagner, Ryoichi Kurisawa, and, with the winning spot kick, Ryohei Hayashi (shown above celebrating), all converted their PK's as Kashiwa took the shootout 4-3 and advanced to the semifinal round, where they will face South American champs Santos of Brazil.
