At Curitiba, Brazil:
Paulo Diaz's equalizer in the 90th minute lifted River Plate to a 1-1 game-one road deadlock with Athletico Paranaense.
Guilherme Bissoli scored for the hosts at 57 minutes.
At Quito, Ecuador:
Marinho scored the winning goal with his successful penalty kick in the 59th minute as Santos took the opening game of their series with LDU Quito 2-1 on the road.
