Road Clubs Take Four Of Five

Action in the playoff round for UEFA Champions League group stage berths continued Wednesday.

Champions Path:

At Salzburg, Austria:

Goals from Mohammad Ghadir (22') and Shlomi Arbeitman (84') lifted Maccabi Haifa FC to a 2-1 road win in game one of their two-match series with FC Red Bull Salzburg.

At Riga, Latvia:

Johan Vonlanthen (12'), Silvan Aegerter (55'), and Dusan Djuric (75') provided the goalpower that lifted FC Zurich to an overpowering 3-0 road win in game one over FK Ventspils.

At Sofia, Bulgaria:

Debreceni VSC are on the brink of becoming the first Hungarian club to reach the Champions League's group stage in fourteen years (Ferencvarosi TC in 1995-96) after their 2-1 game one road win over Levski Sofia. Laszlo Bodnar (12') and Peter Czvitkovics (76') provided the goalpower for the guests.

Non-Champions Path:

At Lyon, France:

Lyon posted Wednesday's only win by a road team, smothering visiting RSC Anderlecht 5-1 in game one. Miralem Pjanic (10'), Lisandro (PK-15'), Michel Bastos (39'), and Bafetimbi Gomis (42', 63') provided the goals for the hosts.

At Athens, Greece:

Maxi Rodriguez (36'), Diego Forlan (63'), and Sergio Aguero (70') each tallied once as Atletico Madrid took their series opener, 3-2, on the road over Panathinaikos.
