Europa League: Round of 16 Concludes: English Pair Reach Quarterfinals; Atletico, Hamburg, and Wolfsburg, Too

The eight two-game series that made up the UEFA Europa League's Round of 16 concluded on Thursday.

At Marseille, France:

Alan Kardec scored the game and series-winning goal in second half stoppage time (90'+1) as SL Benfica defeated Marseille 2-1 on the road in game two and took the two-game series 3-2 on aggregate.

At Liege, Belgium:

Dieudonne Mbokani scored the lone goal of the match (45'+2) as Standard Liege took game two at home 1-0 over Panathinaikos and won the two-match series 4-1 on aggregate.

At London:

Zoltan Gera scored twice (39', PK-48') and Clint Dempsey notched the series-winning goal at 82 minutes as Fulham overturned their game-one defeat in Italy with a 4-1 home win over Juventus in game two, enabling the Cottagers to take the two-match set 5-4 on aggregate.

At Bremen, Germany:

David Villa's hat trick (3', 45', 66') enabled Valencia to gain a 4-4 road draw with Werder Bremen in game two, and, with the aggregate score at 5-5, the Spanish club advanced on the away goals rule.

At Brussels, Belgium:

Despite losing game two 4-3 on the road, Hamburg still took their two-game series from RSC Anderlecht 6-5 on aggregate.  Jerome Boateng (42'), Marcell Jansen (54'), and Mladen Petric (75') eached scored a goal for the German club.

At Wolfsburg, Germany:

Christian Gentner scored the series-winning overtime goal (119') as VfL Wolfsburg, after a 1-1 draw at the end of regulation time in match time (leaving the two-game set deadlocked 2-2 on aggregate) , won the two-match set with guests FC Rubin Kazan 2-1 on aggregate.

As Lisbon, Portugal:

Sergio Aguero's double (3', 33') enabled Atletico Madrid to gain a 2-2 road draw in game two with Sporting Club Portugal, good enough for the Spanish club to advance due to the away goals rule.  The score was 2-2 on aggregate for the two-game series as well.

At Liverpool, England:

Steven Gerrard (PK-9') and Fernando Torres (49', 89') provided the goals as Liverpool overturned their 1-0 road defeat from last week with a 3-0 home whipping of Lille in game two, enabling the Reds to take the two-match series 3-1 on aggregate.

The draw for the Europa League's quarterfinal and semifinal rounds will take place on Friday in Nyon, Switzerland.
