Sigi Schmid, the winningest coach in the history of Major League Soccer, passed away on Tuesday at age 65.
Mr. Schmid's family said that Sigi passed away at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, where he had been hospitalized three weeks ago awaiting a heart transplant.
In 18 MLS seasons, Sigi's teams won an MLS-record 266 regular-season and post-season games with the Los Angeles Galaxy (where he won the 2002 MLS Cup crown), the Columbus Crew (2008 MLS Cup titlists), and the Seattle Sounders.
Before coming to MLS, the German-born Sigi, who moved to Southern California as a four-year-old, coached UCLA for 19 years and won three NCAA titles.
